One of the main reasons Sony ditched the "George Foreman" build of the PS3 and went with the new "Slim" was to cut back on manufacturing costs. Try and get back into the black. But they're not quite there.

According to a report on iSuppli - who have been doing this kind of thing for a while now - the total cost of manufacturing a PS3 Slim as of December 2009 is $336.27. And they sell for $299. Meaning Sony are still slugged with a $37 loss for every console sold.

Sounds bad - and when you multiply that $37 by millions, it certainly seems that way - but it's a damn sight less money than they were losing this time last year.

With the cost of materials continually on the decline, provided Sony can stick at a $299 price point for a while to come, you'd expect the PS3 to start generating a profit sometime next year.

I'm still buying a PS3...
Its the bluray that's making it cost too much.

Edit: Nintendo should add a DVD channel. (just wanted to stick it in here)
+EDIT: and a Music player channel. (Homebrew devs have done it, why can't they?)

You're still forgetting the software side. Sony DOES have a billion and half exclusives out, and nine point four zillions exclusives coming out.

Moral of the story:

I spent too much time typing this.
I'll be happily playing my ps3, wii, and pc in a corner.

I may pick up a banned 360 for 70 bucks though. Pre-modded!

Seems like quite an amusing position. Now there just needs to be an advert from them pleading for people not to buy them

yeah i also think the bluray makes it expensive. a bluray player alone cost like 200 dollar.

It's not really a big deal for Sony. They don't just make consoles you know? I'm sure they have some sort of equilibrium with the products they sell for whatever price, and how much they make off of it.

They aren't losing much compared to what they're going to gain. The original PS3 had a Blu-Ray drive to make Sony win the format-war thus bringing a whole new bunch of licensing possibilities giving them money.

They killed the disc drive's ability to understand DVD-Video commands in a recent drive revision (to stop flat- and softmods), so such a channel would not work with current ones.

theres so many other divisions to support SCE its not even funny
TV, camcorders, camera's, surround sound systems, cell phones, sony pictures, sony music, ect...\

just like MS, even though the first xbox was a complete failure, and it took a long time before the MS games department to finally make money again, they kept just throwing money at it from windows profits and such

I don't see why this is "news." Sony and Microsoft have always lost money with each console sold. They rely on software. That's the only way Nintendo can survive as ONLY a game company. MS and Sony are GIANTS in the realm of consumer electronics, so they can afford to lose money on the hardware. They've done this with every home console they've sold.
