PS1/2 PS2 Slim (SCPH-79001) won't read disks, makes strange clicking noi

I don't suppose if anyone else has experience this? If you did, how did you go about fixing it (short of shipping it away)?

Had a fat ps2 do this it was a worn little plastic piece which is attached to the laser assembly that makes contact with the worm gear which moves the laser back and forth.
