PS2 Mod chip suggestions?

I live in Japan, and recently bought a Chevy Astro van. The Van has a TV and VCR, but I want a DVD player in there too. So, I figured why not use one of my PS2's. I have a fat Japanese one, and a fat US one. I want to chip or mod one of them, so I can play Japanese DVDs as well as American. Anyone have any experience with modding PS2s? Reliable sites, best chips, or solderless options? I'm doing my research, but just thought maybe someone would be nice enough to point me in a good direction, or give me some advise from their own experience.
