My first language is grunting and related communication strategies.
A short sharp zzz is multi use and may be combined with gestures.
Looking at something or pointing with some appendage and zzz might be "that one"/"what about that".
A nod down and zzz is usually taken as an affirmative, or that something is funny or that I acknowledge your attempt to take the piss out of me and found it amusing.
A nod up/head tilt back and zzz is "I want to say something"
While it can end up more of a hiss it is for some still a z sound made through clenched teeth. Usually you are about two seconds from dying or becoming seriously injured, or quite literally "prepare to die". Can also be a signal to tell your party members to also prepare to kill, usually what they are looking at signalling with eyes or obviously not looking at, though that is usually a bit shorter and sharper.
A melodic repeating z is usually a sign of contentment or just getting on with a task, and may accompany each small step within a task.
If accompanied by a slight head tilt then either "I have no clue" or "ready for the next stage (say doing a two person lift of something, though more advanced speakers and more acquainted types with an existing trust bond and skills awareness may be silent and instead it be an observational affair).
