Hardware Possibility of Breaking Wii?

I've had my Wii for about 2 years now, I've bought it pre-modded.
I've just been pirating left and right and felt there are some games that I should buy for the sake of respect of that game.
I'm not sure what the chip is but the clerk gave me a warning that I should only play pirated games on it and that playing original games on it could fry it up.
How is this possible? Will it really break it if I were to buy some authentic games for it?

I never heard about that before. Your Wii should read/play originals just fine, even with a chip installed.

I think some chip(s) had some firmware version(s) which wouldn't let you play original games on double layer discs. Maybe that's what he meant or what confused him.
