hmm no, you can take the base game and improve the levels, maintain the overall story line, add more abilities,worlds and such while being the same game remake.

an example for this is resident evil remake they added a lot of details, new bosses and story section, new enemies and so on while keeping the main story but none of the assets.
heck nintendo has done this very well
fire red leaf green remakes added new islands with new story parts and everything improved.
heartgold and soul silver too they fleshed out kanto which was the main complaint about being too barren in the originals and so on.

Honestly, I think Crystal Shards should get a remake, I loved the dual element combos and the game overall was just amazing.
