I would do that but I'm not going to 100% both.

I got both, but probably going to 100% Y. Probably going to start with X after completing most of the postgame on Y. And like I do with every 2nd game, not going to use the starter then.

An hour into the game and already I can tell that this is a Pokemon game I enjoyed a lot more than Black/White. Already picked up a Torchic from the internet promotion. Actually showing some older Pokemon just to say, "there you go, now see your gen one Pokemon in 3D". Only complaint is that using the control pad means it's a little tricky to position yourself to chat to an NPC.

Other than that, I know there's gotta be a LOT more to go through. Here's hoping online battle will be great as well.

Can you take the rollerskates off? I know using the Dpad lets you walk around normally but is there any way to use the analogue stick but walk? Or switch them around so that the Dpad controls the skates instead?

Nope. You can't take them off.
It's a love or hate thing. I'm leaning towards love though because the controls feel more natural.
