So I have Wood R4 v1.62 and it seems that HeartGold isn't working for me. I'm pretty sure I have a clean rom, but I still have frequent encounters with wild pokemon. Anybody got any ideas as to how to fix this other than patching the game?

The Original R4, at least I'm pretty sure it was, I bought it a long time ago, and I'm running Wood R4 and it still works, just can't remember if HeartGold ever worked... :(

Format your card using the highest allocation size (64kb most likely). Chances are your games crashing because the SD card is too slow which is an issue with the original r4 and clones.

*EDIT* If all else fails format using SD Formatter and try once more.

Games aren't crashing for me, but I decided to try formatting anyways. I don't think it worked though, I still have a high amount of pokemon battles when walking through the grass. I'm pretty sure that that was one of the characteristics of the anti-piracy measures that Nintendo implemented.

Where exactly did you download wood r4 from? Try redownloading from here http://filetrip.net/nds-downloads/flashcart-files/download-wood-r4-1-62-f32256.html

OH! most importantly.. did you also update? If not make sure you go into settings, hit update, and update everything. Believe it or not there is in fact an update and I think its related to the save file.bin or something.

IF all else fails there is a Wood R4 1.64 http://filetrip.net/dl?FhXOBrY7vI but its used in the r4i carts and most likely won't work for you. Still it can't hurt.

do you mean updating from the ds? my ds lite isnt connected to the internet because my router uses a WPA key instead of WEP, is there another way to update this? also, i thought that didn't matter because isnt it the same as manually updating it on a pc by dragging the files into the sd card? anyways, thanks for all the help, maybe i'll just get a supercard dstwo or something

Isn't that how the game is supposed to work...? The Anti-Piracy that the game has is random crashes, and the never-ending spinning Pokéballs in a battle.

In fact, an NPC on Route 30 mentions that if you run in the grass, the encounter rate will be raised. Same goes for trainers. If you run past them, they'll see you.

That's not unusual. Frequent encounters ARE part of normal gameplay. lol

but....they're like....super frequent...like every 5 steps, maybe it's 'cause i haven't played in a while, but i still don't think the encounters were THAT frequent...

..come to think of it, I get frequent pokemon battles as well. Is it just me, or does running significantly increase random encounters? I get maybe one encounter every 6-10 steps while walking and 2-6 while running. I'm using a DSTWO with the ROM settings set to Patch (not Clean).

Yeah wood r4 actually has an update module that updates the internal files (including cheats), it's not the same as updating to a newer version.

I can't speak for HeartGold but SoulSilver worked fine for me.
