Pokemon Elite Redux gets huge 2.1 update with refreshed battle UI and more

A popular hack of Pokemon Emerald utilising the public decompilation project, Pokemon Elite Redux has just had its 2.1 update go live this week. For those who haven't heard of Elite Redux before, it's a hack that takes the base Pokemon Emerald experience and completely revamps it with a competitive focus. With training your Pokemon and swapping moves now being quick and easy to do within the game's menus, you're given the tools to plan and prepare for each of the game's challenges. And believe me, there are some real challenges. Each Pokemon also has three "innate" abilities alongside their standard ability, providing even more chances for interesting team building and synergy.

On my current scaled nuzlocke randomizer run, this Spinda has somehow managed to be the strongest part of the team.

The 2.1 update brings with it a slurry of new features, with the refreshed battle UI being front and centre. Now when selecting a move, you can scroll through pages to give you damage calculations, true power of moves after all modifiers, the speed order of all Pokemon in play, any active boosts, and priority. Some of these features have been previously implemented as a part of the "Info" screen, with this battle UI only going a step further to make the experience more seamless.

Other standout features include new themes for your battle menu, with the Diamond and Pearl theme being my favourite, a bunch of updates to moves, a new Nuzlocke captures mode that limits you to one per route, and a new scaled randomizer mode, allowing you to find stronger Pokemon as you progress through the game.

You can find the full list of changes below, with the game being easily accessible via online patcher.

2.1 - Hotfix

This is a small hotfix to fix the issues that were recently detected. It also brings debug back since it's now fixed! Feel free to thank the coding team for that because they were fast to do it.
  • Fix to the nuzlocke mode: there is no need to start a new save, it should be fine to continue your progress
  • Fix to Randomizer species, no more incomplete Pokémon that may crash the game
  • Yes, Paldea Tauros, all three, are now available too. There are new Pokémons to try now!
  • NFE that were hungry and ate their innates are now back again with them
  • Some NFE stats were also tweaked a bit. And yes, it's a buff that was planned. Now it's live!
  • Some type starters were replaced because they were not the correct ones, they were the alpha ones.
  • Some cosmetic form changes were also added in: Sawsbuck, Florges line, Pikachu Cool Cap forms, Dudunsparce, etc.
  • We added more koi karps to the game. Fish is healthy!

This is an amazing accomplishment, that's for sure and can never be denied...but I personally don't like "challenge" hacks. I prefer hacks that reasonably buff older Pokémon, and make Gym Leaders and Team bosses fairly difficult but still manageable - but not overwhelmingly so.

Like, there's a difference between this and Drayano's SacredGold/BlazeBlack or Pokémon Compass, which are much more balanced in the player's favour.
I've seen alot of takes like this as of recently and i can't help but agree and while not to sound like i'm banging the frying pan too hard, I've seen hacks that make rare candies a key item and that never really sat right with me along with the concept of forced level caps, and people often say it eliminates grinding but that's also a core element of JRPG's, hence why I tend to steer more towards hacks like Vega Minus as it feels like an authentic experience in more ways than just gameplay!

Nonetheless I'll give this one a shot for the sake of at least giving it a chance.

If you do end up trying the easy mode let me know how it is! I've wondered for a while how accessible something like this is to people who aren't necessarily well-versed in the more competitive aspects of the game.
I've played a bit on easy mode, had to start a new save file because I switched to a different emulator

The game itself is fun but the Online Dex doesn't really work for me because only normal difficulty is available on the Online Dex no other difficulties are supported which makes it quite difficult to prepare for battles. The Online Dex made it a bit difficult to enjoy the game since because I can't really prepare for battles I usually end up losing or only winning barely because I have my Scorbunny as a trump card with several types of moves. I still need a multi hitting fire move for it though since burning an enemy is only at 10% if I remember correctly

Long story short I like the game but the lack of preperation takes away the fun part for me. I'm the type of person who likes to prepare before battles that's why I've collected so many Pokemon with so many different types to be prepared and I feel like that's been taken away from me. I really hope this gets fixed as well with some other bugs like the Dexnav not showing you, you already collected the Pokemon or the softlocks when switching out or in. It's usually linked to some abilities and moves etc but no one really knows which abilities and moves cause this softlock

I feel like the game is still in it's early stages and needs more time. It feels more like a beta to me with all these bugs including the Online Dex

Sorry for rambling and complaining so much but that's the opinion I have of this game as of right now. Maybe I'll change it later down the line

No need to apologise, it's always nice to see the thoughts of other people on this kinda thing.

This is crazy. I've been feeling that Hoenn itch again. Might give this a go. Either this, or Alpha Sapphire with an HD texture pack. If by some miracle they remake Hoenn region again in the future I can die happy. For now I'm hoping for Johto remakes as they're overdue IMO. But maybe Black/White are the next remakes coming. Guess we'll find out in a few years.

I'm happy to cover the ones I come across. The larger issue is that most of what I come across are Pokemon hacks since that's what I'm interested in and mostly play. People are interested now, but after the fifth or sixth Pokemon hack I imagine I'll get complaints lol
Can you recommended good pokemon rom hacks?
I don't have time to check all of them for my brother.

I've not been looking too much lately, but a few off the top of my head:
  • This one from the thread lol
  • Pokemon ROWE (open world Emerald with some cool extras)
  • Crystal Clear (open world Crystal with a LOT of cool extras)
  • Prism (wild Crystal hack with new region/story etc)
  • Pokemon Black 3 (another Crystal hack I haven't played but looks VERY good)
  • Frontier Adventure (Emerald hack that is JUST the Battle Frontier, win points to get new Pokemon)
  • Emerald Rogue (very solid roguelike Emerald experience)
  • The Pit (100 floor roguelike experience, looks very fun, been meaning to get to it)
  • Speedchoice/Speedchoice EX (vanilla game with configurable options at the start to mix the game up and just make playing through it a bit quicker if you've played the game a lot in the past)
Hopefully that's something of a starting point for you. I'll get around to writing about some of these at some point, I just find myself constantly busier than I'd like.
