Okay so it is safe to say that I have no idea what any of the stuff I just mentioned actually is.

Been reading some tutorials, and youTube videos, but I am finding difficult to discern what is current and what is out of date information.

Basically my only interest is playing games, would be great to play games from other regions, from older consoles etc, and it would be great to never spend money on game cartridges again.

I have no interest in creating custom or cool looking interfaces or menus. I just want to play games, and be able to save them.

I can't even seem to get started with purchasing a bigger SD card, I have read on Nintendo's site that the 3ds supports sdhc up to 32gb, but then I read other people saying that they have gone up to 128gb, so I am confused here as well. To be clear I have the older original US 3ds, which unfortunately has the newest firmware installed on it.

I have read some people employing some soldering skills to downgrade, and people using specific games (on cartridges) to do this.

I just need to get started on the right path here, so it would be great to purchase the largest memory card compatible, I have read how to format them to make them compatible so I am good there. Next I would like to do whatever is easiest for downgrading my fw, and then from there hopefully I can get some more useful tips from you all.

    A) Never follow video guides as they are always outdated.
    B) The 3DS can support SD cards larger than 32GB, but anything 64GB+ needs to be formatted to FAT32.
    C) You're kinda out of luck for getting CFW as you're on 11.2 aka the latest firmware. Your only options for setting up CFW are either getting a hardmod (requires soldering) or by doing the DSiware downgrade method with another system with CFW.
    D) The ONLY guide you should EVER follow for getting CFW is http://3ds.guide/. Nobody will link you to a better guide.

Great thank you for the response! Couple questions...

So B) you are saying there is no real limit in size of the card that the 3ds can recognize...

    C) What is CFW? Is it just a term used to describe a variety of cfw's? Is what they call the Homebrew Launcher a CFW? Because I've seen videos of people getting Homebrew on 11.2, could something like Homebrew check all of the boxes of what I want to be able to do? Here is an example:

    B) Yes
    C) Homebrew =/= CFW. CFW is custom firmware, which you will get after you follow the guide I linked. You can try to use Hombrew to play out of region carts with the region free launcher that's included, but I don't know how much luck you'll have.

My cousin has a newer 3ds, not the newest, but not the original like mine. I haven't checked to see what FW version he has, but if it happens to be a lower one, and we can get CFW on it, should I then be able to use his to get CFW on mine? Or will it not work because my 3ds is older? I'm new to 3ds in general, it seems like at least some saved game data is saved to the game cartridge itself, but is it also saved to his sd card? If I am going to do this I have to assure him I won't lose his saved game data lol.

    Inside your bootloader (´◉◞౪◟◉)
When she has 10.7 it's very easy to install a cfw on your 3DS. And when she has one, you can have one too.

Does his 3DS have a C-Stick on it? (the small little gray nub above the Y button? If he does, then you can't use his system.

Ya that's what his has. So we are back to do I solder to downgrade? Or do I just keep my firmware and use this other method to put Homebrew on it. Is homebrew what I want? Is something else better? I need something that talks about the pros and cons of homebrew vs something else.

Hardmod or DSiware downgrade are your only options then. Do a google search of homebrew vs CFW. I'm sure there are plenty of sites that lists what's good and bad about each. Or just read through the sections in the 3DS subforums here. I have CFW on multiple devices and I don't regret it.

Luma3DS is what people will tell you to get.

What she is trying to tell you is to install A9LH through this guide,

    https://3ds.guide

If you need more info on why you should install it, look here,

    http://gbatemp.net/threads/why-you-should-install-a9lh-for-beginners.450618/

CFW stands for a custom firmware, it allows you to turn off signature checks and install unsigned titles. It also allows you to play games out of region if you choose one of the ones that allow it. It is very recommended that you choose Luma3DS, but if you want more options, look here,

I'm trying to do something similar, but I want to try to get PKHex, does anyone know if Just trying to get Homebrew without CFW is better for that? I'm already upgraded to 11.2 and I've been having a hard time.

Ordinary homebrew is all that's necessary to use PKHeX; CFW isn't a requirement.

So, do I wait for 11.2 updates for Homebrew or is it easy enough to downgrade?

It's not easy to downgrade from 11.2, but you don't need to. You can access homebrew on 11.2 if you own OoT3D and a Powersaves device, or a copy of either Cubic Ninja or Freakyforms Deluxe.

A9LH is the entrypoint (just a way to access your CFW), Luma3DS is the CFW.

Ah okay, well when I get home from the holidays the soldering will begin! Curious though, if I bought a new 3DS in store, do you think it would come with 11 ver fw?
