PlayStation announces new partnership with Discord

In a blog post shared today, Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced a new partnership between PlayStation and Discord. The aim of the partnership, which is to begin early next year, is said to "bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile". These experiences will enable "friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together".

Details are vague regarding what exactly will emerge out of this partnership but the post reads that the teams are "hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network".

Additionally, Jim Ryan mentions in the announcement that "Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round". This comes after a potential acquisition of Discord by Microsoft reportedly fell through two weeks ago.

Yes, obviously is signed now, it's been announced publicly.

But the point is, at some time there were negotiations, Sony were keen to keep another property out of the hands of Microsoft.

They offered Discord funds AND the ability to maintain control, so they dropped Microsoft, I assume.

I was trying to put it nicely, but the two weren't directly connected. The reports about Sony's investment mentioning the halted talks probably makes it a bit confusing.

The short version is that Microsoft wasn't the only offer, but Discord was also considering an IPO. Just before the talks halted, they had brought in their first finance chief. Talks were halted, but not closed.

Discord is already integrated with Xbox, but not in chat aspects. The difference between the two is that Sony is looking to go a little further, so they invested in the company to help facilitate the integration.
