In a blog post shared today, Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced a new partnership between PlayStation and Discord. The aim of the partnership, which is to begin early next year, is said to "bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile". These experiences will enable "friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together".

Details are vague regarding what exactly will emerge out of this partnership but the post reads that the teams are "hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network".

Additionally, Jim Ryan mentions in the announcement that "Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round". This comes after a potential acquisition of Discord by Microsoft reportedly fell through two weeks ago.

Discord is actually one of the places where I sell/market some of my images. Obviously there are other services out there but it would suck to have relocate again.

Yeah, that’s actually why I picked up Ko-Fi and started linking to my PayPal. I’ve been slowly moving away from Discord due to concerns of it possibly doing something stupid. I am hoping to have more payment services and other options, like my Twitch streams, as means of making some extra money, but still need more time to get all of that really stable. I short, I really hope nothing happens too soon because that would suck. It wouldn’t be the end of the world but suck

A lot of my Japanese Corporate Groups and Live Streams were running on Facebook, unfortunately.

I've been pushing them to switch to Discord for the last few years but the argument was that, Internationally, a lot of former Management and Staff are on Facebook, especially in Countries like Vietnam where mainstream Internet access is synonymous with it.

Slack never took off in my Japanese circles and only Filipinos in South East Asia seem to be interested using it, so hopefully this Sony deal will bring more exposure to Discord for Business, as I feel the only thing it lacked was that.

From my testing and experience, it is probably the best platform to keep Corporate Outreach on in the 2020s.

Yes that does seems to make the most sense. Now that sony have invested in it they can have a great say on what Discord does and now Microsoft cant say to much or rather do much about it. Say if Discord implement a feature that they do not want on Xbox Microsoft is out of luck there when it comes to that.

They did more than offer. They've already signed the check. Discord claimed they had already halted buyout negotiations with Microsoft, though. It's probably more about getting their foot in the door for integration before they miss the chance.
