PlayStation 5 Pro announced, will cost $699 / £699 / €799

It's time to see what surprise PlayStation has in store for the future, with its PS5 Technical Presentation broadcast. Will we see a PS5 Pro? Or will it be something unexpected? Find out now, because the 9-minute livestream is kicking off now. We'll be summarizing the event as it airs, to stay tuned.

Cerny kicks off by going back to the PlayStation 5's launch, detailing the hardware in the system, and how it was an improvement from the PlayStation 4. Graphics, sound, haptics.

Developers have been wanting more, though. Having to choose between fidelity and performance mode has been an issue. Performance mode has been 75% more popular.

He casually drops PS5 Pro's announcement.

A larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, AI-driven upscaling, and more.

This improves the framerate performance for current PS5 games, with higher quality graphics.

He claims it's double the power of PS5.

We get to see a showcase of better graphics and smoother framerates in first-party PS5 games.

Ray-tracing has seen a large upgrade. Better reflections, shadows, and background details.

November 7 launch, for $699.99.

Confirmed separately on the PlayStation Blog was the fact that the system will NOT be launching with a disc drive, which you'll be able to buy separately for $79.99.

Holy damn. Sony has lost its soul.

There is no charm, no soul, no nothing on this announcement. There was a time were Playstation had a motive, the games and whatnot were something to look up to. Now it just like "we have power, buy", much like Xbox, but the later AT LEAST tries to pretend to "be cool". Sony is just shoving this and that's that.

I mean, they could be a bit more friendly. But oh well, let's see what happens with this console.

Who is this even for? Does a person who would buy this actually exist?

To answer your question, I truly don't know. I did a rundown on some launch dates, and Sony tends to release the new model 2-3 years after the original's launch:

OG PS3: 2006
PS3 Slim: 2009

OG PS4: 2014
PS4 Slim and Pro: 2016

OG PS5: 2020
PS5 Slim: 2023
PS5 Pro: 2024

So, the behavior is on-par with Sony's previous decisions, but $780 USD for a souped up current gen console and disc drive? That's a high premium, and my little bit of research says that there are about 20 exclusives.

I'm having a hard time with it all. Consider the alternatives: A mid-range gaming PC (~$600 USD), a Steam Deck ($400-$650 USD), or a Switch ($300 USD). Even an Xbox Series X is about $480 USD.

"Is the experience of owning a PS5 Pro truly worth $800?"
I'm glad I'm not Sony's marketing team because I cannot spin this.

With all that power, does that mean we'll finally get The Getaway 3? Haha... Of course no.

I'm still waiting even though I know it's never coming out. 😭

So once you add the disc drive and vertical stand you're probably looking at £800 in the UK, it would also be about $800 in the US, so the UK version is actually $1,046...

I would have been alright with upgrading and trading the old one in, but they can shove it with that pricing.

Also you can guarantee scalpers are going to buy up the disc drives now they're the only choice to get one of these with a drive.
