Playable early prototype of Valve's Left 4 Dead leaks online

The holiday bounty of gaming leaks hasn't ended, with the advent of yet another piece of in-development gaming history. A "mod" of Counter-Strike: Source was uploaded as part of a leak of other Counter-Strike-related materials, with a description noting that this map, titled Zombie City, is likely the starting point of the development of what would go on to become Left 4 Dead. According to an old GDC presentation from 2009 that featured the founder of Turtle Rock Studios and creator of Left 4 Dead, the concept for the series began one day while the team was creating Counter-Strike bots, finding it fun to kill enemy bots that could only use melee attacks. Their concept would go on to be officially announced in 2006, Valve would then buy the studio out shortly before the game's launch, with both events taking place in 2008.

That basic kernel of 'small team of friends against hordes of clawing enemies' was something we kept coming back to and we soon realized that the 'co-op vs the horde game' had a ton of potential.

The modder who uploaded the map also claims that they fixed a broken texture, and added a handful of improvements for convenience's sake.

Zombie_City is a map created by Valve (or possibly Turtle Rock Studios) that was a part of the map sources folder that released today. It is likely the starting point of Left 4 Dead, and for those of you who have heard the name "Terror-Strike" before, you will love to get the chance to play this prototype level.

My upload fixes a texture by adding a new material for it. I have also created an overview texture, generated a nav mesh, and added a level description, all of which are conveniently packed into the bsp itself for maximum convenience. Try it out and let me know how you think!

Well NES carts back in the day were $60 and adjusted for inflation is just about $197 today's money. So it isn't that bad and back then a full dev team was a handful of guys unlike the massive teams we see today. So $70 isn't bad as they gotta recoup the millions they spent making it. Whereas back in the 80's a million dollar budget was unheard of and today a million dollars is a cheaply made game.
