The creative folks over at Kougaku Navi in Japan want you to play the WiiU's hit shooter in VR with a hacked water gun and the WiiU pad strapped to your back! As crazy as this sounds, they've managed to get this to work and have been tweeting about their project:

The setup includes a Sony HMD headset, a hacked water gun controller and the Wii U GamePad. The latter is strapped to the back to approximate where you are aiming the gun using its gyroscope since the HMD headset lacks one. The gun, which is wirelessly connected to the GamePad, controls moving forward, backwards and shooting.

Although not VR in the "traditional sense", it is an interesting take on the game and also a quite fascinating project! They are currently on version 3.0 and slowly making progress. I, for one, am excited to see where the project will lead and its possible application to other games!

Very cool idea, but that girl in the video didn't look like she was having any fun whatsoever.

Can't really judge her expression when a headset is occupying >70% of her face and she's almost always bending her head down. But from the few instants that she is not bending her head, you can catch her smiling :)

Looks like a pain in the ass. I'd rather just use the Gamepad.

This would be really cool to use on a game like Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009).

Not that I can read any of that text at the moment, no translation service avalable to me at this time. But the pictures look neat.

I need to get a capture card for the gamepad one of these days.

Hmm what if this is what Nintendo meant by NX being a new way to play?

This is cool, but such a control setup wont allow your to jump to other players on the map or choose where to launch your inkstrike (if you're using that special), so it quickly become detrimental in online play if you want to compete with the best of them. Though, I suppose with VR, you likely aren't looking for that haha.
