Platinum Games seems to be ready for the big leagues, as the developer is gearing up for major releases, and a move towards self publishing. In an interview, Platinum's CEO, Atsushi Inaba commented that the company has grown frustrated due to an inability to control its developed games after launch. According to Inaba, when it came to titles like Vanquish or Madworld, publishing company SEGA was strict over letting them move forward with those specific IPs, and that they were unable to create a sequel to Bayonetta until Nintendo stepped in and helped Bayonetta 2 and 3 become a reality.

Though they are currently working on titles such as Bayonetta 3, Astral Chain, and Granblue Fantasy: Relink, which are all being published by other studios, Inaba hopes to spend 2019 preparing Platinum Games for a future where all its games will be self-published. In addition to this, there are two brand new unannounced games currently being worked on, both of them set to be self-published. Neither title was revealed, but Inaba claimed that "the game we're working on truly is unlike anything else", likely referring back to a title that he previously teased back in 2018 as "[something] that would turn the action genre on its head".

Interesting. I wonder when this will take effect. Babylon's Fall is another one not being published by them.

Interesting. I wonder if this also stemmed from them continually saying they wanted to do things with Wonderful 101, but having nothing ever come from it.

Interesting, good luck with that. I hope the games are good. Self published games have different expectations than contract publishers.

Whatever they make can't be TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan. It needs to be more homeruns in the vein of Bayonettas, Metal Gear Risings (and not glorified total conversion mods like Transformers Devastation, though I have no idea how well that game sold), Vanquish, Nier Automatas, etc.. From what I understand, they aren't in the best position financially, especially when Scalebound got cancelled by "We're killing the Xbox brand" Microsoft.

But, you know what they say, the greater the risk, the greater the return. Just hope they don't end up as Clover Studios 2.0!

Seems like the best move for any developer who just wants to put their games on every system/platform for the greatest possible ROI. Publishers today are absolute dipshits who are completely out of touch with what customers actually want.

By “self publishing”, they mean they’re just putting everything on itch.io

Bayonetta, Nier automata, Wonderful 101, Metal Gear Rising, Star Fox Zero, Vanquish--and most of its key staff worked on things like Okami, God Hand and Viewtiful Joe prior to Platinum's founding.

first two comments said "interesting" as their first word...lol, was trying to get a chain going :P

They probably won't make a sequel to Metal Gear Rising for decades, but a man can hope

What are the hurdles a company needs to go through to self publish games in this day and age? Why do companies still publish through main AAA publishers?

    interesting.

platinum games has a fun feel to them. even when i don't necessary like a game they put out, the games always have a certain polish and personality to them. Makes it hard to dislike.

Hope this turns out to be a good move for them.
