Hello everyone. When I was far younger, I loved playing on my PS3. It's easily the console I've spent more playtime hours on. Unfortunately, one day, we got the infamous YLOD error and decided that trying to reball it or anything similar wouldn't be worth it. However, as I was still a kid when this happened, my dad decided for us and bought a PS4 instead. (Don't get me wrong, the PS4 is great in my opinion and in the last years it has given me a ton of fun too)
A few days ago I got a really bad nostalgia strike and decided to download RPCS3 because I really wanted to play some of my childhood games back again, but I've found out that I can't get to run many of them, as any game marked with Ingame compatibility or lower is pretty much unplayable. So I've been thinking of buying an used PS3 and set it up in my bedroom with some old monitor.

So these are my questions.
  1. I've heard it's best to buy a Slim model in order to prevent another YLOD. Is this true? Is there any way to make sure the system won't die to the same sh*t again? What model should I buy?
  2. Is installing a CFW worth the effort if I would only want it for downloading games for free? I mean, I could always buy those games on Amazon or something, but if I can just download them it would be nice.
  3. How much HDD memory should I buy my PS3 with? Is it easy (and safe) to install a bigger HDD if I wanted more storage?
  4. Are the servers still working? Do they have an announced shutdown date?
Thank you very much in advance!

1) False, I see a lot of PS3 Slim with YLOD too
2) Still worth because the homebrew apps and some mods, no all people hack his console for piracy
3) Honestly, it's better buy the minor capacity first (FAT 40GB for example) because it's more cheap, then you can put inside a 2.5" High capacity HDD, the process it's basically "Plug & Play"
4) Servers still up, but I don't know if they announce shutdown date

Hmmm, I see. The Slim thing was something I read about back when mine died, but I wasn't sure anyway. Do Slim models have lower odds of getting the YLOD or something? If not, I would probably go for a Phat model then, and maybe a few months later get a HDD along with some more games. Thank you for your help ^^

The only reason to have a large internal hard drive is if you want to play many PS2 games (not all are compatible, but probably 50-60% are) and some PS3 games need to be installed so that will take up internal hard drive space too. Everything else can go on an external hard drive.

But it's super easy to upgrade your internal. Just need to be smart enough to use a screwdriver.

Ah, true, the PS3 had some retrocompatibility stuff. But I don't think I would be using that, as I still keep my old PS2 and I'm also planning on bringing it back to life. So, in that case, I don't really need a lot of storage, right? Would 40GB be enough?

40 would not be enough some PS3 games require 8 gb install. If you want a lot of games get about 250. You can probably get a used one on Ebay for like $10-$15.

I mean if you only want like 5-10 games 40 would be enough. But I don't know why you'd want to limit yourself.

$15??? Wow, that's an impressive price. But is Ebay trustworthy? I've always been a bit afraid of buying in there.

Anyways, thank you very much for your advice. I'll keep it in mind!

I have bought like 10 used hard drives from Ebay and never had a problem. It's not impossible to get a bad one but usually hard drives are good for decades.

@K3Nv2 Snow Day is pretty fun. My only bitch would be the camera controls, when you move around, say down, you have to move the right stick left or right to get camera to turn and get your view, other than that I like it so far.

From what people say pvp isn't even worth it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.

If you can find enough for it

Toilet paper is considered the money, you collect and buy stuff with TP, kinda funny. Graphics are def better than the other games tho, I think they used Unity 5 engine.

I bet most people at the time still watched it in black and white
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Many of them did before colour television was common.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Likely because black and white TV was in-expensive.

It certainly wasn't inexpensive it cost the same as a new car back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
How much did a 1965 color TV cost?

For example, a 21-inch (diagonal) GE color television in 1965 had an advertised price of $499, which is equal to $4,724 in today's dollars, according to the federal government's inflation calculator.

@K3Nv2, take into consideration how economy was back then

Yeah that's why they listed inflation rates
