My friend has an Xbox that's out of warrenty, and the dreaded RROD just showed up on his Xbox. He doesn't want to send it to Microsoft because his Xbox is out of warrenty, and he's not made of money! Is there some place he can send it that'll fix it for cheaper? Also, if it could do a fan mod that'll prevent it from happening again, that'd be great!

Can you two explain in more detail please? And even though I've had experience with modding consoles (chipped a Wii) I don't think I'm comfortable with modding my friend's Xbox unless it's easier than modding a Wii (which I kind of doubt). Plus I would want to be sure that the mod I do will actually fix the console. I don't want to spend 2 hours doing an X-clamp mod only to find out afterwards that that wasn't the problem.

Also, in case anyone needs it, the RROD code is 0102.

    It's really easy
Here is a video to show you how

    Code:
    http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/05/12/red-ring-of-death-fix-it-yourself-void-your-warranty/
Here is a list of stuff to get

    Code:
    Lowes Part List -

    ÂÂÂÂ* a) 8 M5-.80 x 10 Machine Screws #138433
    ÂÂÂÂ* b) 16 #10 Flat Washers – Nylon #139065
    ÂÂÂÂ* c) 16 5mm Flat Washers – Metal #138319

You can find them in drawers H9, H2, P3
*this may not be the case for every store*

    Radio Shack:

    ÂÂÂÂ* a) Artic SilverÂÂÂÂ

    Grand total - ~$12-$15 dollars
I did have the correct torx bits to unscrew it so THAT I dont know how much that will cost you if you dont have them

Total time (not shopping) was about 1 hour - while watching this video and not losing screws

    I resurrected a $50 xbox 360 from ebay...woohooo

If you live anywhere near to Delaware I will fix it for free I do this all the time ms 360's are crap but if it has never been
opened or had a towel wrapped on it it's worth a shot at fixing i repaired 3 rrod systems and modded the last one for a friend yesterday and yes they are easier to mod vs chipping a wii unless your using WiiGator's Gamma etc..... softmod
either way it's a fun and easy learming process if you wanna try yourself.......

That's actually really helpful, thanks! It does bring up a few more questions though.

    1) Is there any place I can get the parts online, including the torx bits (and the screwdriver itselt [IMG]). Since I'm not quite old enough to drive a car (almost!) I can't go to a Lowes store whenever I want, so that's not really an option.

    2) Are you 100% sure this will fix my error? I'm pretty sure that different error codes have different fixes (please correct me if I'm wrong) so will this fix my error?

    3) Lastly, prying the heat sink off the bolt looks sort of hard to do. Is there any risk I can damage anything in that step?

    a) Ebay (actually cheaper)
    Code:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/XBOX-360-Repair-Kit-X-Clamp-Fix-3-Red-Light-Lights-RROD_W0QQitemZ220360931585QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Accessories?hash=item220360931585&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1307|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50
    Code:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/SCREWDRIVER-T5-T6-T8-T10-T15-for-All-MP3-Player-15-IN-1_W0QQitemZ390031889110QQcmdZViewItemQQptZOther_MP3_Player_Accessories?hash=item390031889110&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

    2) Are you 100% sure this will fix my error? I'm pretty sure that different error codes have different fixes (please correct me if I'm wrong) so will this fix my error?
    a) I am not 100% sure...I can only say it 100% fixed me

    3) Lastly, prying the heat sink off the bolt looks sort of hard to do. Is there any risk I can damage anything in that step?
    a) It wasnt too hard...I used a small flathead screw driver (not the super small ones to fix glasses) and they popped off each corner pretty easily. You could probably use a nail too. I think they gave a warning because some people would RIP IT OFF without a warning

I can only point out what I followed to fix me. It was a cool project.

99.999999% of the times the RROD is because the gpu has lost contact with the board due to, microsofts shitty x-clamps and very low melting point solder. 360 gets warm, soldier melts gpu pulls of of board and there goes the RROD. its real easy to fix

Actually it is not MS who makes the clamps - it is Foxconn (stamped right on them)...
They make motherboards for Dell, OEM (themselves) and HP (I think)
Generally they are pretty good company but the heat problem is bad design.
Bah their loss is my gain... $50 xbox 360 with $14 in repair costs, 1 hour of repair work, and 4 beers.... cant beat it

I kept my "new" one... wasnt a repair...
Just keep it in guest room...

If you got movies and stuff on your computer and want to stream it to the XBOX - check out TVERSITY (it's free but way cool)
    Completes the whole XBOX thing

very easy fix. i got rrod 2 nights ago and was back up and running in about 1.5 hours.

just make sure not to do anything like the towel trick. and make sure to get one of the kits from ebay with all the correct hardware.

if you need a real nice tutorial, PM me with you email address and i'll send it (it's a pdf).

I've tried all the tricks but the rrod always comes back, sometimes it takes 6 weeks, sometimes a week.

microsoft has a 3 year warranty for rrod consoles, warranty sticker or not. only thing is your console must not be banned from live or someone that has called before with the same serial number.

I think with the new arcades the problem is finally fixed, it only has a 150w power supply and the air coming out is cold whereas the old consoles put out alot of heat.

Thanks for the 1st link. I'm buying a kit from the same guy that includes everything I need to open the Xbox, all the things to fix it, and even Arctic Silver for $14. Talk about a good deal! This seems easy enough for me to do. I'll give it a try. Thanks for all your help!

I thought I'd report back on how this went. After getting the pack I linked at eBay and spending a good 3 hours doing this, the Xbox is in perfect working order! I ended up not using the video, but a PDF file that came with the stuff I bought on eBay. It's 46 pages long, has pictures for every step, and is very detailed. I had no problems. Anyone with a RROD should try this. It's way cheaper than sending it to Microsoft, and it gets fixed way faster. Thanks for all the help.

I've noticed that lol. On my old elite, that thing was like a hot air dryer lol. But the air coming outta my Arcade is noticeably cooler.
