My New 3DS XL is on the newest firmware but I installed Luma, Arm9, Hourglass, and IronHax before updating it.

I know updates block flash carts but I'd think you could use CFW to get around it. I just need to pick a good model. The only thing I need is a cart able to run original Nintendo DS games, bells and whistles aren't that important.

Right now I'm eyeing the R4i models but I thought I'd consult the forums before I spent money on one.

According to this list here the only card that runs on New 3DS XL 11.3.0-36U is the R4i SDHC 3DS. However, it says it doesn't have a firmware writer.
Should I be worried about that?

Thats the one I have, and I love it (on a N3DS XL, Luma, Arm9, 11.3). Real Time Save is a great feature, so even if the OP doesn't get this one specifically, I would recommend finding a flashcard that has the RTS feature, as not all of them do.

I've had this same card recommended to me three times.
Guess that's what I'm getting! Thank you.

Personally, I enjoy my DSTT. I use it with forwarder channels without any issue. Plus, it is $8 shipped.

The one mentioned above works just fine with forwarder channels as well (I too have forwarder channels), in fact most (if not all) DS flashcards are compatible with the forwarder channels.
