the question of safety depends on your browsing habits. stay off the p0rn for a couple days, you will be fine.
on a side note, people actually/still use that?
i dont even use an antivirus.

So you'll happily pay to use Norton, but you won't download one of the evil free anti-virus utilities which are probably better than Norton?

Stay off any suspicious/porn/torrent site and you should be good. On side note do you REALLY want Norton? Why no free anti-virus? Pretty much everyone here agrees that Norton is at the bottom of the food chain. Even free anti-virus like avast! or Avira perform much better compare to Norton. You better off with Kaspersky, NOD32, McAfee, or even Trend Micro than Norton.

I think you should be ok; just don't download unknown files. There is always a chance your computer may become infected, but you could always do what I do: until you buy your antivirus software, download a 30 day trial of some other antivirus.

As for Norton: most would be surprised with the latest releases. Pre '09 was notoriously sluggish. However, the latest versions are pretty stable and fast on most newer computers (excluding 360), thanks to the community feature they have added (from what I understand, it skips scanning some files deemed safe from the online database). Although, I do think ESET's stuff or something similar is probably as effective, and is noticeably faster.
