Well, you'll need a Slot 1 Flashcart to play GBA games on it.
gbata is required to patch GBA ROMs, or you won't be able to save.
Then you use Rudolphs Tools to flash GBA games on it.

You have to put the gba games on your card.
You first patch the gba games with gbata (downloadable form this site).
Then you put the .gba files and rudolph's tool on your R4.
Open up rudolph's tool on your R4 to copy the gba file onto the 3-in-1's memory.

The 3-in-1 also works with the DSTT (top toy). I just got both, it's pretty easy. I haven't put any .gba games on the 3-in-1 yet but got the DS Opera Browser to work (after patching), so the "memory expansion" part of it works great and only took a minute to set up.

Gotta get gbata now...

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
