Opinion req: What point&shoot camera are good nowadays?

I've had a Powershot S40 for years now and am pretty happy with it, however, the batteries I've got for it have a capacity of just a few minutes now. So I think it's about time to move on to a less ancient camera.
I've been going over some reviews and sites but I'd love to hear some suggestions from you guys. Some things to keep in mind:

max $250
hd video is nice but not mandatory
don't care too much about the megapixels but at least something decent
preferably SD cards
AA or Li-ion batteries are fine
