The unnamed Staffordshire man, in his thirties, was apprehended after a joint raid by Trading Standards and the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA).

Prior to the official raid, investigators set up a sting operation where they visited him to have their Xbox chipped and purchase pirated games. The console and games were then forensically examined to provide the evidence needed to obtain a search warrant.

Four computers with burners and more than 1,000 illegally copied games were seized in the raid - including 700 Xbox 360 games, 300 Wii titles and 100 PlayStation 2 games. Three Xbox 360 and two Nintendo Wii consoles were also seized. The man admitted to running an illegal chipping operation via his Gumtree.com site for nearly two years.

Michael Rawlinson, managing director of ELSPA, has said "Our team in the Intellectual Property Crime Unit (IPCU) will step up its fight against counterfeiters and illegal chipping services in 2009. Such illegal activity can pose real health dangers for the public and certainly deprives gamers of any proper quality control. Furthermore, it can cause the industry to lose vital income and with it jobs across the UK. "

A POCA (Proceeds Of Crime Act) investigation has already begun to estimate the criminal gain from the offender's illegal activities. The crime itself carries up to ten year's imprisonment, and an unlimited fine.

That sucks for him even if he had over 1000 pirated games. For all you U.K. residents, please wisely gather your piracy info here on GBATemp and other sites quitely and don't try to get your consoles chipped at some facility operation. Just a tip.

He didn't get busted for having pirate games or for having his console chipped, he got busted for having a business selling pirate games. You get arrested for that in pretty much any western country in the world. If you sell pirate games you deserve to be busted anyway.

The U.K. entertainment industry is a direct arm of Law Enforecement?

At least in the US, the RIAA had to file civil suits for IP infringement and couldn't press the US DOJ into widespread criminal indictments.

no, trading standards is though, and they got involved because.... well it involved selling fake games.....

Oh crap.

They won't go looking for small pirates who only pirate software and movies sometimes, correct?

*hides*

Well, they may do, but that may be more of an ISP catching-you-out thing then the ELSPA actively looking out for you.

The title is misleading. He didn't get busted for piracy... You scared me for a second.
Though judging by the scale of the operation and the amount of items seized, I'd say it was inevitable for him to get caught.

I think his biggest mistake was selling pirated games. He could've gotten away with just modding consoles since they're a pretty steady income but he got greedy and sold pirated games too. We have a similar sort of thing near my store and they've apparently been at it for years. They do legit repairs and pc upgrades but also mod consoles.

They were selling pirated copies!

I guess it's more of a risk for those that are trying to make a profit out of piracy.
