Hi all,

I bought contra 4 some weeks ago... it's great old school console/arcade action! (quite frustrating also at times

).. question is are there any other old school type games on the DS? one hit dead, shooters, etc etc.. ghosts and goblins? or anything like that...

Cheers

Not so much in the commercial side of things (pac man is about it) but if you have GBA capability then there were a good amount of ports (stay away from paperboy though).
There is a good chunk of DS homebrew to fill that need (several of the big shooters like duke3d, doom, quake, rise of the triad and a few more got good solid ports), several older games got emu-ported (that is had an emulator tailored for them: recently ghostbusters and further back stuff like international karate)
SCUMMVM is on the DS and pretty damn good too.
There are now a few (net)hack type games, the two most updated probably being powder and nethackDS
Emulators for said older systems are fairly abundant and while maybe lacking some of the polish of their GBA counterparts (rom compression, cheat support (see http://ezflash.sosuke.com/viewtopic.php?t=5974 ), screen filters etc) they still play games and do it well (not to mention have keyboard support for those that need it).

And of course the homebrew news around here.
The following couple are in French but do not let that put you off as they are easy enough to navigate if you do not know the language:

Impossible Mission is a pretty good old school game, featuring the original, remake and all new modes. Not a run and shooter but its one of those "one hit and you're dead" sort of games.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies is a great old school arcade shooter.

Konami's Arcade Classics has many arcade titles on it.

Orcs & Elves is a pretty good old school RPG/dungeon crawler like we had in the EGA PC days.

Also theres Arkanoid DS, Ultimate Mortal Kombat & Worms: Open Warfare 2. Theres also New Zealand Story but its best to try it on a emulator as the DS version has some horrid mini games.

But its best to check out the emulation side of things, Mega Drive/Genesis, NES, GB, MAME (the 80's games) are pretty solid on the emulation side of things. SNES ain't too bad but a lot of stuff won't work.

Coming soon theres Legend of Kage 2, Space Invaders Extreme, Metal Slug 7, 07 Commando and Bangai-O Spirits that will keep the retro gamers happy in '08.

You can try GhostbustersDS.
It's a game ported from the Sega Master System.
It's a really fun game, been enjoying cruising around, catching ghosties!

There are SNES and NES emulators on the DS that work very well, for the most part, so you can enjoy all the classics from those libraries

Well the paddle will actually work on the next Space Invaders game (which looks pretty damn good and better than the other DS game) so at least you can use it on more than one game.
