</div>
First it was the PSjailbreak team which released a debug dongle (130$), but after Sony seized the devices, it appears open sources clones from people who could buy one in time.

Those open sources are :
PSGroove : the first open source payload, destined for programmable USB HUB devices (Teensy, AT90, etc.)
PSFreedom : a port of PSGroove to everyday devices (phones, gaming console, TI84+ calculator, etc. but mostly phones)
Rockbox : PSGroove port, and later PL3 port for Media players (like iPod, Sansa) running under the Rockbox open source jukebox firmware.
PSGrooPIC : PSGroove port for PIC programmable chipset.
PL3 : unified payload

PSGroove being open source, Hermes made few patches to it :
PSGroove Hermes 1.1 : Enable backups playing without a disc in a drive and enable more memory access (peek and poke)
PSGroove Hermes V2 : Introduce a patched mode for problematic games which have controller issues.
PSGroove Hermes V3 : better fix for problematic games, no more patched mode needed (but still available), introduce Homebrew launching. (usb:/homebrew/<homebrew_name>/<filename>.elf)

PSGroove Hermes V3fix (HWM) : Waninkoko made a patch for Hermes V3 to enable installation of retail demo (.pkg) from PSN, which will be corrected by Mathieulh (hence the name HWM: <b>H</b>ermes<b>W</b>aninkoko<b>M</b>athieu)

KaKaRoTo, author of PSGroove, seeing there were now 3 different payloads (PSFreedom, original PSGroove branch, and Hermes PSGroove branch), decided to fuse each improvements from all of them and maintain only 1 payload for clearer and better development, and it was named PL3 (payload3).
The PL3 is then made to be working on previous PS3 firmware (the flaw of the current exploit in the PS3 firmware was introduce in fw2.01), and there' s now Payload compatible for : 3.01, 3.10, 3.15, 3.41
Users who never updated their console to keep OtherOS can now enjoy homebrews too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Hermes quit the PS3 scene and release the last version of his PSGroove port : PSGroove Hermes V4, which improve nodisc mode, include all the patches fix from Waninkoko and Mathieulh, and code cleanup.

Rockbox (for iPod, sansa music player) port of PL3 appears and is available for 3.01, 3.15, 3.41

PL3 allow now (since 22 oct 2010) the launch of backups needing 3.42 firmwares while still on an older one.
It's currently not working for games requiring fw3.50

PL3 is the latest, up to date, payload.
<ul><li><b>Q - So the PS3's been hacked to play homebrew and PS3 game backups?</b>
A - Yes, but not PS1/2 games yet (a PS1 emulator is in the works).

</li><li><b>Q - Will this void my warranty?</b>
A - No, you do not need to open your PS3 to use this.

</li><li><b>Q - Are there NTSC/PAL/Region issues?</b>
A - Nope, you can use any region game and this works on any region PS3.

</li><li><b>Q - What firmware does this work on?</b>
A - 3.01, 3.10, 3.15, and 3.41. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5631427/rumor-sony-blocks-ps3-jailbreak-devices-via-firmware-update" target="_blank">It was blocked in 3.42</a>, but there's ways to downgrade.

</li><li><b>Q - How do I update to 3.41 (for example) and not a later version?</b>
A - You can download older firmware versions <a href="http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php/Ps3OsRels" target="_blank">here</a>, you'll want to stick it on a flash drive like so.
<!--coloro:#007700--><span style="color:#007700"><!--/coloro-->(drive):\PS3\Update\(PS3UPDAT.PUP or PS3PATCH.PUP)<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->
Then on your PS3, go to settings, system update, then update via storage media.

</li><li><b>Q - Can I play games that need 3.42 or later?</b>
A - Yes, using at least the "PL3" payload with a recent manager like Gaia Manager 1.02+ or OM2.1g+.

</li><li><b>Q - How do I downgrade my firmware if it's past 3.41?</b>
A - There's a few jailbreak devices that can downgrade right now, but so far there's no free version, so you'll need to buy one of their official devices until a free version is created.

</li><li><b>Q - Does it work with all PS3 games?</b>
A - Not at any given time, check this <a href="http://www.ps3news.com/subdomain.php?pagename=ps3-jailbreak" target="_blank">compatiblility list</a> (alternate <a href="http://www.psjcl.com/" target="_blank">here</a>) to see.
The difference between an internal and external drive is mentioned lower in this FAQ.

</li><li><b>Q - Will PSN demos work?</b>
A - Yes, using <a href="http://www.ps3-hacks.com/2010/09/16/psn-demo-installer-released-install-demos-on-your-hacked-ps3/" target="_blank">this tool</a> (or a later version).

</li><li><b>Q - Does it require me to buy anything?</b>
A - You will need one of three things, which are covered in the next three questions. If you don't have one, you'll need to buy one.<ul><li>A pre-made jailbreak device.</li><li>A USB programming board to make your own.</li><li>An already-existing device like a smartphone or programming calculator.</li></ul>
</li><li><b>Q - I see a lot of pre-made USB jailbreak devices, how do I know which can do the most?</b>
A - If you're buying a pre-made one, <a href="http://www.playstationclub.nl/psgroove-hex-collectie/" target="_blank">check this list to make sure it can be updated with the latest payload</a>.

</li><li><b>Q - If I want to buy a USB programming board and do it myself, which do you recommend?</b>
A - I recommend <a href="http://shoptemp.com/products/USB-Programmable-Debug-Board-1.1-p-190.html" target="_blank">this $20 board</a> from shoptemp. Other boards known to be used are the <a href="http://www.pjrc.com/store/teensypp.html" target="_blank">teensy++</a> and <a href="http://www.ps3hax.net/2010/09/psgroove-working-with-blackcat-usb-video-inside/" target="_blank">BlackCat 1.2+</a>. If you search around you can possibly find other programming boards and modified versions of PSGroove or other payloads for them.

</li><li><b>Q - I heard something about being able to use a PSP, iPhone, Ti-84+, or (insert stuff here), will they work?</b>
A - Check out the <a href="http://gbatemp.net/t252522-definitive-guide-to-installing-psgroove" target="_blank">PSGroove installation guide</a>.

</li><li><b>Q - Will a flash drive work?</b>
A - No, these USB devices are NOT flash drives, <i>a flash drive will NOT work</i>.

</li><li><b>Q - What if I download a program that claims to turn a flash drive into a jailbreak device?</b>
A - You've most likely downloaded a virus, <i>good job</i>! Those are all fake, it's NOT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE.

</li><li><b>Q - Can't I just wait for somebody to port it to the PC?</b>
A - According to <a href="http://kakaroto.homelinux.net/2010/09/psfreedom-source-code-released/" target="_blank">KaKaRoTo's blog</a>, <i>"Unfortunately, no, most PCs have a USB controller that only supports Host mode, but you need Slave mode to be able to make this work."</i>

</li><li><b>Q - What's a "payload"?</b>
A - It's the code you put on the jailbreak device to make it jailbreak the PS3. There's a couple different versions, but in general the latest is the best as they add features like playing without a disc in the drive and some internal features certain homebrew or games may need.

</li><li><b>Q - Can I play game backups with a homemade one? It says it's been disabled.</b>
A - If you're using a port where game backups are disabled, you can re-enable it (though you will need access to the source for your port to recompile it). In descriptor.h, find <!--coloro:#770000--><span style="color:#770000"><!--/coloro-->0x78, 0x78, 0x78, 0x78<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> and change it to <!--coloro:#007700--><span style="color:#007700"><!--/coloro-->0x62, 0x64, 0x76, 0x64<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> (which changes a string from "xxxx" to "bdvd"), then it will rip/play game backups like the "official" devices.

</li><li><b>Q - Isn't this stolen from Sony?</b>
A - No, <a href="http://www.ps3hax.net/2010/08/ps-jailbreak-reverse-engineered/" target="_blank">it's been confirmed as an original exploit</a>.

</li><li><b>Q - What does the jailbreak do, exactly?</b>
A - It sets the PS3 into development mode, and allows you to play games from a harddrive (as well as rip them to one). If you are using an original jailbreak payload, you will need to have an official game disc in the drive in order to play them, but it can be any official working game disc. Newer versions of the jailbreak/payload remove this limit and add other features.

</li><li><b>Q - Since you say I need to have a game disc in the drive, does this mean I can't play game backups if I'm using an old payload and my PS3 won't read any discs ?</b>
A - Correct, if the PS3 does not detect an official PS3 game disc (it can be ANY official PS3 game disc) then the BD emulator will not launch with the first generation of jailbreak hacks, so you can only run homebrew. It's heavily suggested you update your device with the latest payload, or switch to a device that can.

</li><li><b>Q - Do I need to have the device plugged in the entire time?</b>
A - Some official ones require that, however <a href="http://ps3wiki.lan.st/index.php?title=PSJailbreak_Exploit_Reverse_Engineering#Cleanup" target="_blank">it's been discovered they purposely reset the PS3 when you remove them</a>. The homemade ones can be unplugged after activating, though you need to reactivate dev mode each time you turn the PS3 on.

</li><li><b>Q - Since it rips it to the harddrive, can't I just "transfer" already-ripped games from my PC and put them on a harddrive for my PS3?</b>
A - Yes.

</li><li><b>Q - What about ISOs or burning discs?</b>
A - It will not play burned discs.

</li><li><b>Q - Well then how can I transfer backups from my computer to the internal drive of the PS3?</b>
A - You can use <a href="http://psgroove.com/?p=1085" target="_blank">an FTP program</a> to transfer over a network, or a <a href="http://comgenie.com/filemanager/" target="_blank">file manager</a> that lets you copy from a FAT32 external to the PS3's internal, in case you have problems with the FTP or it's speed is crappy. Even though it needs a FAT32 external, most updated PS3 file managers can split large files to fit on FAT32 partitions to copy over.

</li><li><b>Q - Are there any limitations on playing games from a harddrive?</b>
A - Yes. While it can back up to both the internal and an external....<ul><li><i>For an external harddrive</i> it's limited to FAT32 for now, so some games don't work because FAT32 has a single-file limit of 4 gigs, and some games have single files (usually cinematics or one giant world data file) measuring over 4 gigs, so those don't work on an external.</li><li>An internal harddrive does not have this limit.</li></ul></li><li><b>Q - How do I get around the FAT32 limit?</b>
A - Buy and use an internal harddrive, which doesn't have that problem. The PS3 will take any normal <i>SATA laptop (2.5") 9.5mm-height</i> harddrive. You can find them all over the place on sites like <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%20600003459&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Order=REVIEWS&PageSize=50" target="_blank">Newegg</a> (500GB for ~$60 USD), <a href="http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Category/guidedSearch.asp?CatId=8&sel=Detail;17_791_47516_47516,Detail;17_35_24990_40163" target="_blank">TigerDirect</a> (500GB for ~$73 CAD), and <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_11?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=laptop+hard+drive+sata&x=0&y=0" target="_blank">Amazon.co.uk</a> (500GB for ~£45). The largest drives (such as 1TB) tend to be 12.5mm instead of the standard 9.5mm and will thus not fit.

</li><li><b>Q - How hard is it to swap out the PS3's harddrive?</b>
A - An 11 year old could do it watching <a href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=replace+ps3+hard+drive&aq=f" target="_blank">video tutorials on youtube</a>, don't worry.

</li><li><b>Q - Can I go on PSN with this?</b>
A - Maybe yes maybe no. It's a constant fight between hackers and Sony, so updating this each time the status changes would be pointless.

</li><li><b>Q - If we do have PSN access, can Sony detect me using this online and ban me?</b>
A - The backup manager's ID (LAUN12345) is easily detected by Sony when you're playing online, since that's what is used to launch the game. While it is possible to change the ID of the manager and supposedly wipe logs, more research still needs to be done to see if it's detectable. We don't know what exactly Sony can check and ban for, so go onto PSN at your own risk for now!</li></ul>

[*]Q - What if I never play a backup online?
A - No current or past system (Sony's included) tracks offline gameplay and reports it back when you use online, so it's highly doubtful that Sony added the ability to the PS3 (which has not been hacked until now).
[/list]

It was mentioned by Mathieulh that the PS3 logs title ids even when you're playing offline. Dunno if it's true or not. It might be worth putting in a warning all the same.

Nice FAQ also.

I saw what he said (where he listed the title ID, including the 12345), but he did not mention anything about it logging while offline... only online. If you saw something different (such as a later update) saying otherwise, please link me.
And thanks. ^^;

QUOTE(Rock Raiyu @ Sep 1 2010, 11:58 PM) PSP version of Groove is being worked on. Check out PSX-Scene for more details.
Got it, will update (since they show signs of actually knowing what they're doing, even if it's in the early stages), thanks.

Sure thing here's the link.

A - Mathieulh reports on his twitter that IDs of titles you play offline are still logged, so don't risk it.

Do you know if the titles are stored per profile, or per console? I'll be waiting for the iPhone/PSP release before I do this (seeing as though every teensy board ever seems to have suddenly sold out), but it'd be worth knowing anyway. Not that I ever touch my online on the PS3 anyway (nor the actual console, although homebrew on the Wii caused me to start touching that again), but it'd still be good to know.

K, updated the online ban info, and added info about the PS3 ISO2JB tool somebody made.

And you're welcome, guys. This is a lot better than typing the same crap over and over and over each time somebody asks.

I read on PS3news that it does not work when you try to load games converted with this tool in the back up manager.

If it's recording them for online player stats and such (such as updating your online profile for achievements) then it should be per profile, but if it's done so Sony can purposely check for piracy and such, then it'd be per console. Even if it's the first Sony might still check, so I'd wait for official reports.

Link? The program is still a work in progress.

I read that it decompress but doesn't decrypt eboot etc..
I don't know if it's the case, but it confirms that it's currently not working (v0.5)

Source is from a warez site.

Im not trying to be a dick but the link is already in your FAQ, if you read down through the post you'll see people talking about it.

I know it's still a work in progress, perhaps the will be a separate program the decrypts the eboot so it can be loaded by backup manager.

It's a good FAQ btw.
