Unfortunately when you move games from the Internal to external, you are limited to external speeds. With FTP transfer, it took about 8 minutes to move a 12GB game from my PS3 to a computer harddrive. The same game took approximately 35-40 minutes using this program.

While time is not the best, it is still very convenient approach to back up backed up games

Edit: With backup manager 1.0, I was not able to play a game moved to external and files were split up. Maybe a future revision will support this?

Eh...I only get about a 700 kb/s connection via ftp and it's wireless so there's always the possibility of a drop. With a wired transfer I don't have to worry about stuff like that.

Plus I don't think we need to worry about the backup manager supporting split games, we just need to wait for NTFS support with the backup manager and file manager.

I think Rydian was asking that

Since the file manager splits isos over 4 gb, will the backup manager be able to play that game since it was split for each file to be less than or equal to 4gb?

It might split the files on the FAT32 but whether the game is playable depends on the file.

If the game data is over 4GB, like Uncharted 2, most likely the game will crash.

If it's just a sound or movie file over 4GB, like Final Fantasy, then the game will run until it hits that file. Then it might either crash, or keep going.

Also internally the components are

SATA drive limited to 1.5Gbps
USB2.0 interface limited to 480Mbps
Wired Ethernet interface limited to 1Gbps. Though realistically most people will probably be running 100Mbps.

To me, theoretically running internally should be the fastest since it would saturate the theoretically USB2.0 interface at 480Mbps. Going over best case wired Ethernet you're probably only getting 100Mbps, unless you've got a full Gigabit Ethernet backend which is unlikely for most people. Why it would be going slow from the internal SATA to the USB interface is odd.

Ripping takes a long time because you're limited by the read speed of 36Mbps, and whatever decryption needs to go on.

Unfortunately the File Manager doesn't display transfer rate or progress and I got bored waiting until it finished without something being displayed on the screen my measurements may not be accurate. With FTP, I am running nearly 550 -700 Mbps using Cat5e + supporting LAN. When moving from Internal to USB external, I doubt I was getting 480Mbps (60 MBps). I would approximate it to be more about 80Mbps, maybe I have a slow drive?

80 MBps is a lot better than my FTP's 700-1000 KBps

I have a spare external hard drive kicking around (was going to upgrade the one I have for my wii but never got around to it yet). This filemanager will be a boon for me to get files from my PC onto the internal drive of the PS3 without the need for FTP.

Will link the file manager.

Fun_Zephyr let me know in a PM that the compatibility list I had linked is private, I'll try to see if there's an alternate and just add a note for now.

Weird I can get to the spreadsheet fine. Try this link and see if it fares better?

I find the ps3news one to be a bit 'noisy' compared to this version

If and when a bypass is made for the numerous jailbreak clones, can the same be done for PSGroove users? What I'm asking is PSGroove updateable?

Deltaburnt: Ah, I was logged in when I tried.

Doyama: That's an older one that doesn't have as many entries.

I linked to the PS3 news one instead because it's got a lot more entries on it.

The PS3 News has usually has 2-4 entries for each game, which is one of the reasons why I feel it's so 'noisy', and the # of entries looks inflated. At least the google spreadsheet one is one entry per game and is concise about it. Just my 2 cents.

Technically the PSGroove implementations are one step ahead of all the commercially available ones. Version 1.1 has the 'peek/poke' capabilities. The custom firmware loader uses that in order to load the firmware of the usb stick into RAM. Also I believe a lot of the low level dumping tools, and registry editors need 1.1 as well.

When transferring games either via FTP or FileManager to an internal or external drive - is it necessary to include the update folder?

I removed the update folder from Genji and was still able to boot the game perfectly. If I assume that the game doesn't call to the update folder during gameplay, then I should be able to beat the game without any problems.

Edit: I noticed there is a registry editor. I wonder if the Firmware version is stored in it. If it is, it may be possible for two things:

1) Trick the playstation that it has an outdated firmware (like 3.0) allowing you to instal any firmware above 3.0 including firmwares with otherOS. However, this may be dangerous for multiple reasons. You may have a mixed firmware. Maybe a new firmware you get out of this will have 3.X components but some remnants of 3.41 firmware causing a buggy firmware.

2) Trick the playstation to believe it has an updated firmware but remain on 3.41. Maybe use the PSN as long as you have all the required data to use the PSN. Similar to the Wii, if you have updated IOS's and channels, you don't actually need to install a newer system menu.

I wish there was some kind of bootmii for the PS3, I would so go crazy on changing the registry! Maybe I'll make a backup on it and as long as I don't bork my PS3, I can always restore it.

Yes you can use a 1TB drive, however the PS3 uses laptop drives. These are more expensive than desktop drives and their capacities aren't as high.

They're about $120 on newegg, though the only ones with reviews average 4/5 stars.

Not sure if you mean internal or external. However concerning external drives, there does not seem to be the issue with certain drives not being compatible. So you don't need to go out and buy a 'supported' drive like with the Wii external USB disks. I am currently using a 100GB external USB that didn't work with my Wii but works totally fine on the PS3.

Pretty much just go on Newegg and find whatever size you want within your budget.
