Oculus Rift pre-orders now open - $599, April 2016

The consumer version of the Oculus Rift is now available for pre-order at $599 (USD).

Units are expected to start shipping in April 2016 and each unit comes with the Oculus Rift headset, a wireless Xbox One controller and two games - Lucky's Tale and EVE: Valkyrie. The much touted Oculus Touch controllers will be sold separately at a later date.

What do you think of the price? Are you jumping into the Oculus Rift or waiting to see what the other companies, such as Sony and HTC have in store with their own versions of VR? Or are you simply not interested? Let us know in the comments below.

Look I know the difference between ps4(1.84tf) and best in class gaming pc(titan x 6.9tf) but if sony can solve frame rate issue it will be good enough to trick your brain (only the center of your vision need full rendering and the rest just need basic draw and then go blur). And do not forget that many 3a games on steam are barely playable compared to the perfect console version.

That is due to developer laziness. If the port was decent it would be better than the console version.
It's not because PC is inferior. It's because devs are lazy.

I think that VR is here to stay, but I will need to wait for this price to drop. Since the beginning of gaming we've been moving closer and closer to being in a video game. Wii motion controls, 3D, someone working on smell-o-vision (I think that died), and now a virtual reality headset. The only thing that can kill this is a Holodeck from Star Trek.

If xbox one can do, so should nx. Do you have fury x or titan x?
If Xbox can change, and if Nintendo can change then everyone can change!

You mean this?

And neither, actually. I have a GTX 970.

This certainly looks very interesting but think it's better to just wait to see whether this'll be a hit or a miss.

1. Why is the consumer version more expensive than the developer kits, isn't it usually the other way around with extra specs and applications to work with?

2. Why is this being shoehorned with a controller that most like everyone already owns or does not need/want? The games included are nice too but I'm really bothered by how tacked on it is to this bundle and inflating the cost more than nessesary.

I'll get it when it comes bundled with the touch controllers instead, a price drop would help too.
1. The dev kits used inferior hardware when compared to the consumer version. There was a third prototype that went unreleased as a dev kit which was closer to the costs and specs of the consumer version, which probably accounts for why the price difference seems so large between the DK2 and the consumer version.
2. According to an AMA with the founder, the extra peripherals have virtually no impact on the pricing of the hardware whatsoever, and removing them wouldn't do anything to lower the costs.

At the end of the day the Oculus Rift is nothing more than a neat gimmick, It's not going to revolutionize anything. I was their for the last "VR" fad, it'll be neat and you'll enjoy playing it for a while, then you realize it isn't comfortable to wear a headset for extended periods, that it hurts your eyes to keep looking at that screen. At that price not a chance I'd give it a shot yet, I equate this to the 3d effect on 3ds, a neat idea that works reasonably but is annoying and impractical so you don't bother most of the time.
