Hacking (noob question) Why can't we change 3.6 so anyone can update to it?

I probably have no idea how updates work, but what's stopping us from just changing the version number or something and hosting it on a special DNS like the 3.6 and 3.65 DNSes?

Because updates are signed; and if you can (as in "have the ability to") change the version number and sign it again, you might as well preinstall Vitashell as system app in that update :)

No, that's from the "below 3.6" part of the guide. I even mentioned it above as the 3.6 DNS.

Oh, checksums & signatures, of course... Couldn't we disable those with h-encore or something if we wanted cold boot though?

You can patch checks in the OS that would prevent you from installing the modified update, but you can't (to the best of current knowledge) cheat around the anti-downgrade system the Vita uses (which doesn't appear to be that well documented either!)
