So there is some truth to this from what I can find. Ernesto Miranda (Smokey) was one of the founders of the gang and he was indeed in the States illegally, but I am also finding several of the members were also legally in the US. The US has the ability to take the piss out of nearly every gang at once, US and Mexican, at any time. It involves legalizing and regulating most drugs currently listed as illegal, however, so the likelihood of it happening is very low, especially considering how hooked we are as a nation on privatized prison cashflow.
