Hey everyone,

I bought a Wii recently and decided to follow the steps on wii hacks guide to use ModMii to be able to play games off of my Crucial BX500 SSD. I managed to install the homebrew channel successfully. However when I use USB Loader GX, I find that the Wii freezes on Reinitializing devices (My SSD is plugged into the correct USB port, i've doubled checked that). Having tried then WiiFlow, then screen is simply black on starting, and with CFG USB Loader, it just hangs on the splash screen. When I run syscheck, it hung on testing ios249, and after adding skip args, also on 250. Regardless, I have attached my syscheck. Given this information, my own suspicion is that the cIOS was not properly installed (i did it in offline mode), but aside from the steps available at wii hacks guide/cios , I have little clue as to what alternatives I have to making sure that my installation is correct.

One additional note is that upon connecting the Wii to WiFi, it offered an update (currently on v4.3E) but I'm wary of doing so in the case of bricking my Wii, unless its reasonably safe to do so.

Do not update Wii from system settings. I think it is possible to do update but not with the standard method.

As for the freezes, if possible try something smaller like flash drive about 128 GB or so. While connecting HDD / SSD to Wii is certainly possible, if memory serves it's a bit of hit and miss. Some will work some will not. It may be the case here. Problem with iOS 249 or whichever is of course a possibility as well.

I would recommend redoing the hack according to ModMii, if you can do so. That tool is pretty great and should allow you to reinstall the two cIOS correctly without issues.

If that doesn't fix the issue I would recommend ruling out that the SSD isn't too power hungry to run off of a single USB port. If you have an externally powered drive, SSD case, or an externally powered USB hub use one of those for a trial run. That way the drive won't be powered by the Wii, and thus will definitely get enough juice to work.
If it works that way, but not when it's connected directly, then the SSD you're trying to use is simply too power hungry and you'll either need one that uses less power (the WD Green line, for example), live with having to power it externally, or get a USB-Y cable (not really recommended as those can be very sketchy).

Thank you i will be sure to not update the Wii from system settings in this case. An alternative memory unit sounds to be a likely solution.

Thank you for suggesting an alternative SSD. I have refunded my current drive, and ordered a WD Green. Should the issue not be rectified, I will looking into re-hacking the Wii.

I appreciate you both for taking the time to view and reply to my post.

I don't remember details as it was ages ago but I thiiink it goes somewhat like this that you launch special homebrew that will do some checks, download the update and do it in a way you don't have to re-hack your Wii. However like I said it was ages ago and I don't know the details, not to mention if the method was improved somehow. You would have to do some more digging on this one and as per usual, be careful as there is always a chance for brick (even if relatively small).

I appreciate you both for taking the time to view and reply to my post.
You're welcome, hopefully the case can be solved somehow. Try to do check with small flash drive at some point as these should work 100% cases (or almost). Technically microSD with good USB reader counts as one as well.
