Homebrew is what mostly kept it alive. Glad too see the Wii is still relevant now because of Homebrew. :)
The Wii homebrew devs are so dedicated the N64 emulator on the Wii is better than on the PS3 which is very surprising. I could say the N64 emulator is almost perfect. They even managed to get a semi-DS emulator with some games actually running. Again the PS3 a stronger console could not do this. Just amazing isn't it?

I remember one of my younger sisters getting an Xbox 360, and tried out Kung Fu Panda on it. Being the oldest, I was more interested in the Wii, my other sister agreed, and after about an hour having that console, we convinced my third sister's father to return that and the game, for a Wii. Of course, Wii came with Wii Sports, so we were having fun with that. I was 14 I think. My second sister, the one who wanted the 360 originally, actually kept that Wii up until recently. It's outside my bedroom now. I should just take it in and store it. I have a Wii of my own, hence why I haven't scooped it up. Hmm, maybe the Wii she abandoned isn't the original, I'm having a really hard time remembering now. Whatever the case, yeah, still have a Wii myself, it's hooked up, I played Melee on it a couple weeks ago. Someday I should commit more to Melee, it was so jarring going back to it, how fast it was compared to what I remembered.

Yeah, happy almost birthday to Wii.

TBH, I never really liked the Wii. SMG 1 & 2 definitely some of the best & most satisfying gaming I ever experienced, but as a whole I feel the Wii's catalog was negatively affected by the gimmick. And ironically, also by the commercial success of the console, which resulted in a shitload of crap getting released.

    Gamecube Forever. Seriously.

But I'm somewhat hopeful for this Switch thing.

I got my Wii back in the early decade, probably 2012 or 2013, and I played hours of Neogamma on it, as well as Wii Sports and having fun with WiiConnect24. I got back into it this year starting April, and I got pretty good progress on it; I installed Priiloader, got BootMii working, everything. I even bought a Classic Controller for it this summer because I was tired of playing with wired GameCube controller for VC games, and it's pretty much working so far. The only thing that's bothering me is that now it feels less nostalgic than it was a few months ago.

    Good times :yaywii:

My wife waited for 3 hours in the early morning chill for a Wii on Black Friday. She told me she was getting something else for someone else. Totally surprised me! I recently just got a 256gb ds card for it. It's a great console. Almost as good as the ps2 in its heyday.

I never tried working on games until I started writing homebrew games on the wii with devkitpro. At the time it was so simple and full of possibilities without the distractions of writing games in Unity or those other bloated tools. Maybe in the future the homebrew comunity will reemerge but with newer faster systems with 50 x more ram available it might be a exclusive system for the hardcorest of the hardcore homebrewers.

I've had my Wii for the longest time, sold it off a while back though. I wasn't missing anything selling it off tho. The Wii was just a little emulation box I could do on my PC, 3DS, or Wii U. The Wii was a cool little thing for a while but to me the homebrew couldn't even make it cool for me.

I wish I could have gotten a Wii when it was the shit. I got mine in january 2013 I think, and by then the fad had already worn out. I enjoyed quite a bit of Pokémon Battle Revolution though

I remember when i got my wii and used bannerbomb to install homebrew channel and even discovered it was bootmii boot2 compatible, then i discovered my wii was modchipped (until this day i don't know which one it is), remember spending thoudsands of hours playing mario galaxy 1 and 2, Zelda's at general and many other games. Then i discovered Dios Mios and started having even more fun with gamecube games (since i never had one).
Today i almost never use it since Dolphin emulator run most games i need at nice resolution but sometimes i still appreciate him to play Skyward Sword (dolphin can't run it properly because controls) and some other games.

    Gambia, The
Can't believe it's been ten years. I've played it from the beginning and still do. So many great gaming memories that remind me of everything from great to horrible real-life memories. Homebrew became necessary after playing Call of Duty titles for hundreds of hours. They (and very few other titles like Red Steel) made the disc drive spin like crazy. Presumably this ruined the disc drive. I'm thankful for this forum and the people who gave me step by step instructions.
It's worth mentioning that I played the Wii much more online than offline until the shutdown of N. Wifi Connection. I must be a minority.

I got the Wii late. It must have been 2012 (so I guess that was about 6 years after release). When I bought one the Family Edition model was in full-effect (the one with no Gamecube ports). It cost me $99 Australian dollars, on sale. It was bundled with Mario Kart & the 'steering wheel'. It came with the newer MotionPlus controller.

    gamecube
Since then I have bought a second-hand Wii with those Gamecube ports I wanted (plus getting more Wii remotes for cheap is nice). And since then I have spent more on GameCube controllers than the Wii hardware itself. I wish they would re-make the original purple controllers instead of those Smash Bros ones. If Nintendo ever fails, I think they have a huge (HUGE) future in re-releasing older hardware and games (some of which they have been doing in a sort of half-hearted way).

    hacked
I only hacked my Wii early this year. The Wii definitely has its place, even though the hardware suffers from Nintendo's (now typical) desire to save too much money. The transition from Gamecube graphics to Wii graphics isn't all that big, in my opinion. I can just as easily play a Gamecube game without noticing a huge transition in graphics power (aside from the 4:3 Gamecube screen).

    media player
All the Media Player apps that I have tried on the Wii have left me severely disappointed. One of my main goals was to have it playing MP4/MKV movies but that isn't working reliably. I was keen on the lower power consumpton of the Wii compared to the Big Two.

    aged well?
In my opinion, Nintendo's console hasn't aged well. I do get a fair bit of enjoyment out of it, but it's graphically so far back from PS3/XBOX 360. To this day, I am still amazed at the quality of those squishy rubber jackets and the impeccable quality of the controllers themselves. Though I severely dislike the use of gloss, particularly on the black model, since it shows so much more visibly. The new Mini model is so cut-down but designed far more in keeping with what I like.

I got a Wii last winter on the cheap. The owner said he bought it back when you couldn't get one so I'm assuming 2006? So that makes my Wii 10 years old!!! The owner also kept all original packaging, accessories, including all documentation that originally came with it. Luckily the owner happened to like keeping original packaging just as much as I do so it was like I just got a new Wii!!!!!! I went thru all the documentation just like I would any new thing I would buy. Pretty cool! :)

It had 4.2 on it so I updated to 4.3. Then I hacked it and since it was from 2006 I was able to install bootmii as boot2 so I've been running neek2o the whole time. Booting straight into neek2o on startup ROCKS!! Besides letterbomb, HBC, and bootmii as boot2 my Wii is virtually untouched. One of the greatest benefits of being a late adopter is the hacking has already reached maturity so I was able to choose my hacking path. Been loving my Wii ever since!!!! :D
