I think around 2013/2014 we'll see a real Nintendo successor, not just some upgrade. They've said multiple times that they don't release a console until there's something significant that the predecessor can't do, HD not being that significant thing.

Also considering the architecture and programming of the Wii, what they can do while keeping full functionality is pretty limited since there's no real OS running in the background, and rather everything is just run off disc. (Off-topic; this makes me excited for the 3DS since I think there will be a background OS running, since there would need to be for a constant wireless signal being transmitted. There's a lot more interesting things that can happen with background-OS's when it comes to features and updates.)
Also, the fact that all their fixes just add new IOS's, etc. It's just a mess. Plus, it's not like the Wii will be getting any slimmer, either.

SO, maybe their next system may be considered the 'Wii 1.5' based on hardware, like the Wii's called the 'Gamecube 1.5'. I kinda doubt that, since Nintendo's not that dumb. They knew they could sell the Wii as that "new" system even with cheaper hardware, but as new systems will possibly be coming out that will look even more impressive than the best PS3 visuals, my guess is that Nintendo will impress with their next-gen system.

I wouldn't mind a Wii redesign that improves things a little without alienating the current user base.
For some reason they don't wanna do it, but I think and entirely new, customizable system menu, a new Wii remote with the motion plus incorporated and wireless nunchuck , maybe more internal storage memory ( upgradable ? ) and an HDMI output, would make new users happy, while others can still get most of the upgrades from third parties.
I don't think there would be anything wrong with it, after all the big N does the same for all its handhelds, and even PS3 and 360s got a slim version, but it seams Nintendo just wants to wait and release an all new system that will blow our minds out !

If Nintendo were to release a Wii 1.5, I'll bet most changes would be interior, such as HD output, and expandable memory, and the like. I don't think making the Wii "slimmer" would be a significant change.

After all, how much smaller can the Wii get?

Well after my wii mod is finished it will be just under an inch think

What has also got me thinking is why doesnt consoles go bad to cartridge games, i mean flash memory is becoming cheaper and cheaper by the day and would be easlier to over come anti piracy problems that consoles have. i know the ds has flash carts but if Nintendo say that 3DS is "impossible" to hack why wouldnt they incorporate such elements into a console. Also the smaller cases that house the cartridges would mean more games can fit on my game bookshelf

except they cant make it smaller unless they remove the gcn controller and memory card ports
and even then the drive needs the space

This/ Nintendo hasn't said shit about shit. In fact, they pretty much said there wouldn't be an HD Wii. at all.

I dont know, with the way things are going, it would take a lot of expensive flash memory to fit games on it. DVD's and CD's are only a few cents each to make, but with flash memory, its going to require a lot more. Also, pix of this mod plz.

EDIT: also, to address the whole HD wii thing, i dont think it will happen. Nintendo had has a tendancy to make minor changes to handhelds before stepping up to the new thing, so theres already been an established pattern there. But with consoles, nintendo has always been straight through with no changes.

No I dont thing they would do this.
The required gpu power would be much higher (around 4 times I guess) making it a major upgrade

IF they do it imho they will do it as sony and ms did:
smaller
lighter
cooler
cheaper parts
more storage
maybe a 480p hdmi output

but nothing more

Those were purley asthetic. The Wii 1.5 would feature sofware as well as hardware updates.

That makes no sense. How can you pull pixels out of nowhere? If any thing it would upscale current games (not true hd), but I don't see a hd wii coming out. That will be saved for their next console.
