Nintendo Switch Online to launch in the second half of September

upload_2018-8-10_14-35-15.png

With the launch of Nintendo's first premium online service impending, it has today been confirmed it will be launching in the second half of September, adding a little more information to their previous prediction of just the month itself. The service will give users access to online play, a selection of online-enabled NES games, and a much anticipated online save data backup feature.

Will you be buying a Nintendo Switch Online subscription when the service launches? Are you hoping Nintendo will add something more to sweeten the deal? Let us know your thoughts.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time Nintendo has pulled off the dumbest shit ever, and saying that it will be that way with free games not needing the subscription cause they devs handle the server is a bit of a falacie as xbox makes you pay and all 3 services only manage 1st party game servers. None of the money from psn, xbg, or nno send any money to other devs for there servers.
yeah xbox does it but playstation doesnt and i doubt nintendo will block them tbh.

Srs a free game requiring a subscription to play is not free anymore :P

Cfw greatly outweighs what nintendo are offering. I can backup my saves for free already so why would I pay them for the privilege? !!

And the nes games... Come on nintendo we've played the shit out of them over the last 20 years...

They must have something up their sleeves to charge for this... Either that or prime 4 has an awesome online multiplayer mode... Now that I would miss...

"Paid online will deter hackers" is such a poor excuse. They could do that, or they could finally make a serviceable anti-cheat system? It's a reasonable price, I'll give you that, but offering no Virtual Console and forcing you to subscribe for a handful of NES games is simply insulting, not just to the people who are paying for Switch online instead of PS+/XBL Gold where modern AAA titles often appear but also to the people who are still yearning for GameCube virtual console (or a Virtual Console at all).

I'd like to add that PS+/XBL Gold are more expensive, but they also have an international dedicated server setup - Nintendo are using peer-to-peer (P2P) direct networking, so they don't need any dedicated servers as middlemen. This is literally just Nintendo asking for money so you can play online with each other in the same way as Wii and Wii U. It's pathetic.

Several PC games that don't make you pay for WiFi detect cheaters with ease. It's not hard

To be fair, a lot of those games either use a P2P connection (avoiding server uptime costs) or have microtransactions that provide a constant revenue stream

You mean P2P like Nintendo is using? Gee isn't it odd how PC devs can use P2P and not charge, yet Nintendo uses it and can charge now. Before you use the "but game x has microtransactions" argument, remember that Nintendo has a regular stream of income from Switch hardware and accessories which amount to even more than in-game transactions could, profit margins in mind.

Nintendo has more money than both Xbox and sony. This is a way for them to get more money. They don't need it, but their greedy and want to drain nintendrones every last penny

Er... Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I'm fairly certain that Switch games all go through a server dedicated to that game, and P2P is only used in local multiplayer

nintendo servers are only for you to find your opponent, when the play actually happens its all p2p so they aren't dedicated servers but just setting up the metting.

dedicated servers host the games themselves, nintendo servers only say which people will p2p with each other and then leaves that.

Peer to peer is two or more clients connecting to each other over the internet for network play. Local multiplayer is just a splitscreen version of the game. Nintendo does not have dedicated servers and has never had them for games, instead simply relying on players to directly connect to each other. This means they have no servers to maintain, and online play is done with all players directly connecting to each other without a server middleman. Dedicated servers ensure a consistent experience, but P2P is still.. serviceable.

By local multiplayer I meant LAN play where Switches connect directly over a network

Just because Nintendo does not use dedicated Servers right now does not mean that they can not use them in the future.
And what better time than the soon to be released Multiplayer Games (Darksouls, Smash, Diablo 3) to introduce us to dedicated servers to finally fix that online lag?

I can see that happening and the price would be much more reasonable.

Probably not for me. No Splatoon, smash I like local, same for Mario kart.

Maybe for Mario maker if it comes to switch and has significant upgrades. I have the Wii u one so if it's just a port... No thanks.

I also have many of those nes games already; some built into gc animal crossing, some Wii/Wii u vc, Some 3ds, actual nes carts, even a gba e-reader with some nes game cards and etc. No need to rent a copy.
