Nintendo Switch Online NES/SNES games for December revealed, includes Donkey Kong Country 3

More classic games are on the way, for users subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Five more titles will be added to NES and SNES library on Switch, on December 18th. These additions include Nightshade, for the NES, and Super Valis IV, Tuff E Nuff, The Ignition Factor, and Donkey Kong Country 3, for the Super NES. December's lineup means that players will finally be able to experience all three of the original Donkey Kong Country games on the Nintendo Switch, following Donkey Kong Country 2's addition back in September.

At $20 a year for nearly 100 NES and SNES games, Tetris 99 and Mario 35, the Switch online service really isn't a bad deal, even if some of the NES and SNES games are weak.

Still, it's time for it to expand, add N64 already, or at least Game Boy.

lol I am loling so hard at all the switch owners playing a donkey kong rom this Christmas instead of Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K 60fps like I am on my rig ;)

hehe

hehe

I mean I'll be doing both. Crazy how well some of those 8 and16 bit games still hold up.

I'd agree with this as well. $20 isn't a bad deal. I mostly got nso for cloud saving after my first switch's nand got corrupted, and I lost all saves. the nes/snes games are a nice touch though. I've already beaten breath of fire 1 and super mario world (maybe one or two others as well).

No. Nintendo's online service really is a bad deal. Many of us just download entire console libraries. What planet are you living on?

Yeah I mean I have roms too, but I can't pretend that illegally using roms makes this service no good. I much prefer not feeling like a piece of shit when I play games even if they are from the NES and SNES days. Plus I just look at it as I'm paying $20 a year for cloud saves and all the free games are just free bonus content. You may think it's a shit deal and that's fine, but I just don't see it that way and never will.

$20 would be a decent deal... If you actually owned something.
With this piece of shit service, you don't own a shit lol
You're paying for a rental fee.

Thanks but no, I'm okay with Steam and RetroArch, which have way better online infrastructure for main games and retro games than Nintendo could ever hope for. And for FREE.

interestingly, both dkc 2 and 3 have hard modes (if anyone didn't know that), but only dkc 3 gives you more percentage for its hard modes. there's a 104 and a 105%. the harder of the two only has four dk barrels in the entire game and no midway barrels. lightning lookout! is infuriating. to get the hard modes, you have to enter a code when creating a new game. I have completed both as well as dkc2's on the wii u. :D iirc, one of the codes is barrel on the controller, but I think that might be dkc2 (can't remember).

This shitty thing is that by giving us this drip feed of classic games for "free" as part of the online subscription, Nintendo has an excuse not to actually sell/release these old games.

I would totally pay money to own some of my childhood favorite SNES titles on my Switch, but NOPE! Just gotta stay subscribed and cross my fingers that Nintendo will throw in the ones I want.

I haven't hacked my Switch, but this type of BS makes me want to do it.

People pay for online play, this is a "gift" for the subscription.

I have barely touched the NES or SNES games and still got my money's worth, which is under 10 bucks per year, since I share a family subscription. No whataboutism needed here, but please name a cheaper subscription service in the field of entertainment that provides more than just online functionality.

If you try to reduce the service to those old games, you clearly must be desperately seeking for reasons to hate on it. You are probably the type to argue that a subscription would always cost $3.99 a month, because the 1-month pay plan says so.

Because a) it's a SIXTH of the price of the other consoles' paid online services, and b) the rest of the library is already fantastic.
Reminder that the online was free until Ninty decided you should pay for it instead. In exchange for the same awful online play and old games you've seen time and time again and probably played before, or not good at all to begin with.
Might be cheaper than the others, yeah, but I'd have to guess those other subscriptions by sony or microsoft sure give you more bang for your buck.
But whatevs.

Fireman simulator looks like fun, and I know of Nightshade because of Jontron.
I hear Nightshade is pretty good. It's from the same developers as SNES Shadowrun. HVGN/Stop Skeletons from Fighting did a video on it once.

But it's also available on Steam; Fanatical sometimes offers keys for as little as a dollar. Are any other NES games available on Steam? You'd think it would be the sort of thing Nintendo would disapprove of.

Enjoying all those bugs that won't be patched out for another few months?

Maybe if the Nintendo Switch was my first handheld Nintendo console, I'd be more excited for the NES and SNES titles releasing on it, seeing that I made the initial investment on the Switch and will try to maximise its value proposition for myself.

But it isn't; the New 3DS XL is and with it I have a smaller, more portable form factor that has a mature Homebrew scene which enables almost all of Nintendo's consoles, with the freedom of getting Virtual Console titles or Injecting your own.

It also isn't my first stationary Nintendo console, that being the Wii with its Homebrew, so docking the Switch for retro titles isn't appealing; I'm probably the minority, but my only reason for a Switch is to play current-generation games.

While I use and hope to continue using SX, I'm not sure I can recommend it due to the current situation as I just don't know what the future will bring. I can only speculate so that's why I'll recommend what I know very little about - atmosphere - and that you just get it now and don't look back. If you're sitting on a launch unit with the tegra bug....I have no idea why you're not reading the guides right now.
