The NGC's controller's layout worked incredibly well for games that were designed with it in mind. Third-party games, games from other systems, and anything that might have you using three buttons almost at once didn't really work all that well. It's not a bad design, but it's not that flexible. I think the diamond configuration is here to stay. At this point, it's pretty much become the standard.
Though, if Smash stays as competitively popular as it is, I'm sure you'll have a NGC controller like option on just about every console Nintendo puts out in the future.
