If you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, Nintendo has just released a new benefit for its users. Nintendo Music is a new mobile app that allows you to listen to soundtracks of various games. From NES titles all the way up to current Switch releases, there's OSTs of many first-party Nintendo games, organized by characters, artists, franchises, and mood-based playlists. For those worried about spoilers for games through track titles, there's also a spoiler-prevention option. Nintendo plans to release more albums over time, as well. Nintendo Music is currently available to download, exclusively for NSO subscribers.

you don't need to do that all these so called PREMIUM ost are out there right there free to download if you know where to look (like a certain K site). you don't need their shitty app any mp3 player will do (like aimp) and i guarantee any mp3 player will work a lot better than their shit app too.

Honestly, considering how many "free" games/apps I've played or used that forced an ad on me practically every level/round/etc, not to mention YouTube forcing an app with practically every video - even the adblocker on my laptop browser has to wait a few seconds before skipping ads so as not to trigger YouTube's adblocker detection - I'd personally take an ad-free music app that's included as part of something I'm already paying for anyway. I don't want to have to pay for yet another subscription service for ad-free music, nor wait 30+ seconds just to listen to a 2-3 minute track or song. (Because yes, I've had times where I had to wait at least that long because there was no way to skip the ad - or the ad maker attempted a deceptive trick that would open your mobile web browser instead of skipping/closing the ad.)

What kind of adblocker are you using? uBlock Origin has no such issues. I haven't seen an ad on youtube in years, and it seems to me that either uBlock had gotten sneaky, or Youtube has ended their anti-adblock crusade.

Using Malwarebytes Browser Guard, which has been fairly effective at completely blocking out ads almost everywhere they pop up (in addition to blocking trackers, and protection from malware and scams). I say "almost", because I did mention that it doesn't entirely work with YouTube ads. Basically, the ad pops up for a very brief moment before going black screen with no sound (the video screen, not my laptop screen), then after about 4-5 seconds, it moves to either the next ad (if another one pops up) or to the video.

Used to skip ads immediately and go straight to the video, but YouTube's clearly been attempting to combat any and all adblockers wherever possible. Historically (from my experiences) either by making an ad completely unskippable if an ad blocker was detected (no Skip option at all unless I loaded the same video in an Incognito window), or preventing the video from being viewed unless Browser Guard was turned off or YouTube marked as an exception (like that's ever going to happen). Haven't had anything like that happen since the recent bit of Browser Guard giving me a black video screen long enough to keep YouTube's anti-adblock measures from triggering, so I guess Malwarebytes managed to find a workaround.

Not surprising. The moment you ask them for a legal method to get music for free (or anything for free, really), they instantly back out of the argument. Typically because they can't think of a method that hasn't utilized music piracy in some way, or they themselves are so far down the piracy rabbit hole that they can't see anything else.

You don't own that music. The record label can cancel their license with the service provider whenever they want. Likewise the service provider can take it away from you too. Downloading means nothing since you need the proprietary client to access that downloaded music and it's on a self-destruct timer if you don't phone home.

Nintendo is so obsessed with controlling their IP they won't license out their official releases (like SEGA) and want you to download their own app and pay THEM for a membership that MIGHT let you access it if you have a phone that isn't degoogled and still tracks you out the wazoo. That's how bad it is right now.

Bandcamp is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, and that's if the artist even sells there, which they usually don't because record labels don't want you to own things.

To be fair, a lot of the music that's on the app has been made available through physical soundtracks (Splatoon 3 and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet being two such examples, with Splatoon 3 even getting another soundtrack - Ordertune - next month). That said, they are typically Japan exclusive, meaning those outside of Japan will have to buy them imported. Still, the option to have actual CDs for the music is there if one is willing to utilize it (though I know at least a few people here on GBAtemp who would rather pay all of $0 for their music - much like their games).

Good to know. But still, not all soundtracks are on the Nintendo Music app. And trying to find a specific game in particular that has the OST that you enjoy listening to, makes it quite tricky.

Forgot to respond to this comment, but this comes right back around to the issue noted: streaming services aren't permanent means of acquiring music. Yes, you can listen to music on those streaming services free with ads (or pay to have those ads go away), but you never know when the artist will have that music pulled from the service. It's the same with streaming services for movies and TV shows. I should know - I can no longer legally (outside of locating a DVD set) watch the pre-Disney Star Wars: The Clone Wars seasons without subscribing to Disney+, which I won't do since my family's already subscribed to Netflix and Hulu.

The only way to legally access music through more long-term means is by having a physical CD soundtrack, whether you buy one yourself, or someone else gives one to you. There's no service that lets you have free access to music for any longer than what's within the terms they or the artist set.

You didn't specify you were asking for a way to get a lifetime license to music, just a legal method to get them for free, and streaming services literally give you that in exchange for ads, they were the ones to introduce that concept. I'm by no means saying trying to defend them, but it is unlikely this is going to change since that has been the norm for quite some time and most people are fine with it, and if you see it as a problem then the best solution is to just pirate them, so the people arguing that are not really wrong.
