Although the big selling point of the 3DS is glasses-free 3D, it seems even Nintendo may not be using that trick all the time, according to Satoru Iwata.

Iwata said that "I think there could be a Nintendo 3DS software title which does not use the 3D feature at all, and I believe Nintendo will develop such software." However, Iwata also says "Instead, other features of the Nintendo 3DS should be focused on. It might be a communication feature, or other functions (such as the gyro sensor or the motion sensor). The important thing is that each respective software title has its own characteristics, and appeals to the consumers in a way that fits the software," to reassure users that some unique aspects of the system will be used.

He also stressed the usage of the 3DS's communication features (such as SpotPass and StreetPass), saying "I believe we have to implement new proposals focused on another appealing feature of the Nintendo 3DS, which is the communication feature."

Iwata did emphasize that two of their major upcoming first parties, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, will have a large focus on 3D usage.

Could this be because of cropping issues encountered with the 3D on the 3DS or lack of large popularity? Or maybe Nintendo feels that not every title should use the system's selling point. Plenty of Nintendo first party games hardly emphasized on motion controls to play them.[/p]

Either way, I'm certain this won't change the fact that Nintendo will end up producing most of the "good" titles on the 3DS. Just like the Wii.

they can also use the extra CPU power to make some really good looking 2d games as well. This will also speed up game release. Remember, that it takes about the end of a system's life to totally max out what it can do.

This isn't surprising news to me...I didn't expect ever game to be 3D. The 3DS has a bunch of other features they can focus on.

But that was a third party game and I don't think it got exactly stellar reviews.

This is good news in my eyes, now producers will hopefully stop trying to force 3D and stop being intimidated by 3D (if they ever were).

I don't see this as a particularly big deal. One of the DS' selling points was it's touch screen, and not every game used it (as a touch screen.) Same deal with the bottom screen - a lot of games use it for just a map or just hot switching items - and to a much lesser extent, the mic, which 95% of games don't use at all.

how can you have a large focus on 3D usage? all 3D does is gimmick so far, it doesnt add any value to gameplay or anything... at best it improves immersion a little...

Hence why this does nothing to negatively affect the 3DS.

Isn't that just like a DS game without the bottom screen? Or at least without the touch screen?

That's the nature of the beast, to make any sort of touch-screen games you're going to have to leave the top screen to some other function.
Nintendogs was an exception but I wasn't keen about interacting with a silhouette.

Well, it's like if the devs of the PSV are forced to use the rear-touch panel.

It's good that it's optional. And can't 3D help with depth perception and making trickier jumps?

I swear I've heard them say this before. ' You will see 2D games on the 3DS blah blah' Anyway the advantage straying away from 3D will allow other features like motion control to work properly and maybe a prettier screen to look at. [IMG]

Well, the Vita isn't also called the "Playsation RearTouchPanel". 3D is the major selling point of the 3DS, while the Vita is mainly just the HD graphics. Otherwise they're both rather similar in other control options.

That would really subtract from me wanting to get a Vita, it would suck.

I read an article about a game dev that was talking about not using the s3D-function, apparently it will allow them to use 3D on both screens. Which imo could be pretty interesting in puzzle games etc..
