So it looks like they made some sort of agreement to own or buy the Ryujinx name.
*Edited for clarity.

Last month, Switch emulator Ryujinx was forced offline after Nintendo contacted its owner to arrange its removal. While there were rumblings that the emulator might not be completely dead a few weeks back, it seems that Nintendo has now taken official ownership of the website, presumably to stop anything from reappearing under the same domain (thanks, GamesRadar).

This change in ownership was flagged on the r/Ryujinx Reddit forum by user XeClutch, sharing a screenshot of the WHOIS database website which positions Nintendo of America as the emulator's main 'Registrant Contact'.

According to WHOIS, the domain information was last updated on 7th November, though there's every chance Nintendo took official ownership of the Ryujinx site prior to this date.

They have the domain, not the emulator. As far as I know they can’t just buy an open source project. At least not without express permission from each contributor (or removing the contributions of those who object). Having said that, Ryu has an MIT licence. If they want to use it, they’re basically free to either way as long as they include the licence in whatever the project is.

It’ll be interesting to see if they do make use of the code down the line, since they would need to disclose it via the licence.

I meant buying the name Ryujinx, since they took over the domain. Wonder if that's basically it, just take ownership and blank out the site.

And thanks for the MIT explanation, very helpful in threads like this. If they made a new version of the emulator it could have a new license locking it down, but the last released version of Ryujinx would still be under the old license, correct?

That’s my understanding of it at least. I’ll admit I’m not an expert here so much as just a person that’s had to be aware of licences when using open source code in a closed source setting. Always happy to see further insight on such things.

I'm not 100% with MIT. But if its something like the GPL, yes. It can be revoked, but ALL versions with the GPL will always be GPL licensed. You can't revoke it and expect all others to disappear.

I use pass*phrases * generally so, longer and not terribly hard to remember. But I write my work password down in my phone, because I run Amphetamine on my work macbook so it doesn't go to sleep (I work from home so no unattended access issues). I RARELY have to ever enter my password, because of that, so if I don't write it down I will 100% forget it. 10 times in 3 months would be on the higher end of how often I type it in
