just a small discussion that hopefully won't die too quickly.

does anyone else think that the ds isn't really shaping up to the gba? GBA had its own established series, (megaman zero, battle network, golden sun, castlevania, mario kart, sonic advance genre, i cant even remember them all but damn there were more [IMG]) which were always hits and people who were fans of them were eagerly anticipating their release way before their arrival.

like the gba, the ds does have its trademark hits. unique and cool games like *sigh* has to be mentioned, great game phoenix wright, [IMG] metroid prime: hunters, trauma centre, and meteos. however, i just cant see the ds carrying itself along. the psp is still no competition imo, mainly because its not focused towards games so much, but for a console thats been out this long there doesnt seem to be a steady flow of good games like the GBA had at its peak. And in my opinion the DS isnt exactly heading upward in game quality.

So... am i wrong? is it more that consoles are becoming less-and-less long-lived because of the next-gens coming faster and faster? more blatant piracy? opinions please [IMG]. Perhaps its just because im older, but i, nor anyone i know is very excited about new ds titles barring the rare diamond in the rough. I've checked through the essentials list, and ive gone through alot more than those (which i will admit is ALOT of games) but it doesnt seem the same.

I don't agree about the "flow of games", and I love a lot of DS games. I love just as many as I loved GBA games, and I hate more GBA games than I hate DS games [IMG]

Anyhow, I think a big slowdown in the production of games is them trying to make awesome use of the stylus. Which is supposedly why Phantom Hourglass was pushed back (again) ... and if they must to make it a great game, I can wait. And I think the Nintendo market/fans have shown to Nintendo that they are willing to wait for quality games.

Let's be honest, it's not like we have a choice. If you like waiting try living in Europe [IMG]

There ARE a shortage of high quality games compared to the GBA... On the other hand, the GBA has had quite a bit of time to gather quality titles to itself... If you can weed through the crap, that is.

well i think the DS has many awesome titles like castle vania series , supermario etc... i think they get bombared with those dodgy movie games like ROBOTS DS or BRATZ DS which have 0 gameplay beacuase they suck so much..

nah, i think ds is a little better at this point. The variety and production quality of the top games are much higher. All it's missing is a new Battle Network game, and even that's coming in a few months.

Where were the good games on the GBA? I haven't met too many. And I haven't really met any fresh, new games on the thing at all... On the DS on the other hand... Pac Pix, Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents, Trauma Center, Kirby Canvas Curse (needs a Sonic-sequel!), Project Rub, Phoenix Wright, Lost in Blue, ... Lots of great things that stand for the DS. Lately it's been a little quiet, the only interesting games I remember were the sequels PW2 and EBA. However, we're waiting for Hotel Dusk, Zelda, Tingle... The guitar simulator just came out which is kind of awesome. There are also a lot of classic titles flowing in now that I don't care too much about but some people seem to love. I'll certainly take a look at Pokemon, though, and at Project Exile, Dragon Quest 9, ...
I think the DS is the best system ever made. That's not quite true for the hardware but every day it becomes more true for the games appearing on it. Homebrew is pretty awesome, too. Squares 2, Heretic with touch controls, and so much more great stuff, I simply can't list it all.

I have to agree with the folks here. You're getting crap on any system (*cough* Forever Diamondz) thanks to the american marketing machine. But there are a steady flow of titles that keep players of all kinds engaged long enough to make it to the next title. And even if the well dries up for a few months, there is enough replayability in the DS library, not to mention homebrew, to carry you through. [IMG]

I haven't used my DS for anything else than homebrew (all hail the return of Dragonminded!) for about three months.

It's true that there is a draught of games that appeal to me (SEE HOW I DIDN'T SAY "GAMES I DON'T LIKE SUCK AND PEOPLE WHO LIKE THEM SHOULD BE SHOT" ? Live and learn, kids), but honestly, a big reason is that I've grown bored with it, and I got a Wii. The exalted, nay, holy video game system that girls can play. The hallowed console I yearned for ever since I saw the weird remote controller, which never ceases to amaze me, and has already replaced the SNES as the console which I will have the fondest memories of (even though ol' SNES carried me through middle and high school, the worst fucking years of my LIFE), and because the Wiimote is such a delight to tinker and play games with that I completely forgot about the DS. Shit, I'm still nervous about why there's still no announcement for a Star Wars lightsaber game or a Bushido Blade on the Wii. I even considered buying red steel for more than ten seconds! That's how exstatic I am! Sorry, DS, but your sister's awfully sexy!

I still have touch detective and PW2 to finish, also gunpey and castlevania to try out (is it still bugged as all hell on SCSD?) and Kirby Squeak Squad and magical starsign to begin playing, so I've got enough time to let my DS rest until Zelda PH and FFTA2 (god, I hope I'm not single when this is released!) arrive. Maybe if Nintendo pulled their fingers outta their ass and worked on a Super Smash Bros. DS with online play, I would take more interest... Just to catch up on the library. So a pause in the releases isn't a problem with me. Let developers add some polish to their games, all the better for me.

Look at me! I'm snubbing like, a half-dozen games which can easily be placed among the most excellent pieces of software in their respectful kind! Two fucking adventure games that are as much fun as the games released in the monkey island years, one nintendo game, and a castlevania game that doesn't feature raiden, uh, I mean, Soma in it! I personally didn't like FF3, but I imagine a lot of people absolutely love it as well! I dunno about magical starsign, but it seems fun.

On the homebrew front, Warcraft Tower Defense, Lemmings (AT LONG FUCKING LAST), DSO, damn! Well, I devoted maybe ten minutes to each before going back to Warioware on the Wii, or having an actual life.

I think the DS's problem right now, is that everybody already has one and probably has a ton of fuck-awesome games they're still playing. And, the Wii got released. Praiseth be Nintendo, blah blah blah.
So my attention and my money are spent on Wii games. Dunno about "series devoted to the console", as most of the games I even care about playing must have miyamoto in the credits as of late, and are just what I need to stay happy with my purchase... But frankly, I'm not worried about not seeing yet another megaman battle network 4687 or pokémon clone. Very not my kind of game in the first place, sorry for the fans, though.

I agree that the GBA was one of the greatest handhelds of all time (I have never spent so much time in a single-player game as with FFTA, save Morrowind, and that was because I developed mods for it. Fuck the FFT purists who hate it.), but remember, it was thanks to its huge library. The way things are going, the DS will have an even huger library, so I shouldn't worry.

I agree... I bought my DS lite a few months ago and I still haven't find a game that catch's me. also the recycling of games (castlevenia, mario, FF... ect.) doen't help either.
But I guess it's a function of time and as time goes by more games are developed, at least the TV\movies based games wave is over (I guess) so I expect to some good titles ahead.
