After initial reports came in that Nintendo would immediately delete cloud saves once your Nintendo Online Subscription ran out, the company has stepped in to better explain their policy. An official Nintendo representative explained that players' cloud save files would remain safe for a full 180 days before they get deleted. If you cancel your subscription, you'll lose access to those save files instantly, but customers don't need to be wary, as there's confirmation that Nintendo will keep your data for 6 months, giving a grace period to those who want to come back at a later date to resubscribe and retain their saves. Certain save files of games like Dark Souls Remastered or Pokemon Let's Go will still not support cloud saves, as a means to prevent players from exploiting and duplicating items in specific titles.

I doubt it is to better explain. They just saw all the angry comments towards that and quickly changed their policy and are acting now that it was always like that but that they just hadn't explained properly yet. People are so gullible when it comes to companies.

I'd sooner believe the actual company to explain their own shit than sensationalist news outlets or fanboys who didn't get their facts straight in the first place.

    "Clarifies"? More like "backpedals".

Doesn't matter to me personally tho. My biggest gripe with NSO are no dedicated servers and knowing Nintendo I doubt they'll ever pull a 180 on that.

Are you being serious ? Good for you being so gullible. They never said anything about it ! This was the biggest complain people had and were bombing their twitter page, youtube channel, facebook and so forth with this particular complaint. This was also the easiest complaint to adress. It is quite easy to suddenly change your policy and tell everybody after all the complaints happened oh yeah sorry we just forgot to mention that. You would think a company that has so many talented people and smart on people as employees give out a simple statement like this from the start and they didn't and now they suddenly do after all the complaints, the dislikes and so forth. Well good for you being so gullible

Well, they're still far from giving a service as good as Microsoft's regarding this, but at least now they are on a par with Sony.

I think it is a respectable point of view.
It could quite probably be just backpedaling, but trusting today's sensationalist fake news bullshit that we have instead of actual journalism is perhaps even more naive.

I prefer not to trust anybody that "comes with the news first". Let the facts and actions speak, even if that takes longer.

Well i think it is backpedaling. But ofcourse i can be wrong, it's just my opinion but just now that this was their first response '' "Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership." If you cancel or let it expire, you'll lose all data saved on the cloud.'' wich paints a totally different story entirely than what they're saying now

I don't think he was referring to your opinion but rather the various news outlets who shout first and think later. Let me be clear with this: I'm not pointing fingers at GBATemp with this one but needless to say, there are more than a couple of gaming "news" websites that won't think twice to report twisted or plain wrong facts just to get a few more clicks. I don't think I even have to name them but you know at least one starts with "K" :P

Nevertheless, I agree with your opinion. Given the uproar that followed NSO's unveiling you'd expect them to "clarify" a missing detail or misunderstood point just hours after the announcement to limit any possible damage, maybe the immediately following days tops (they might be a company but their PR/Social departments are not deaf, no matter what they want you to believe). This took way longer than that, meaning they most likely had to rethink their policies internally. XBOX One flashbacks, anyone?

You can say all you want about how they didn’t clarify, instead choosing to backpedal due to complaints, but it’s still better then doing nothing. Don’t complain about that your complaints have been answered.

Backpedaling being in the title would be sensationalist news if anything. We're not given 100% fact that Nintendo did or did not change their initial plans. We just know they had a vague statement on their U.K. And NA sites that very much inferred that data wouldn't be kept at all after cancelling a sub. That original statement has been better explained to the public now.

It comes to two conclusions: that Nintendo managed to botch their PR related side of things, or they kneeled to appease their vocal fans. Doesn't matter regardless, as we're given 6 months to deal with saves now.

Actually I would say it matters because if they really did change their policy after all the negativity, it means they've become extremely greedy bastards and backtracked after realising they wouldn't be getting any money.

If they really did plan for 6 months grace period from the start they could have put out a statement within minutes of the bad press.

I also think it is backpedaling, just making it clear. But I would "give the benefit of the doubt" I guess.

Well, I know I've already said it before and I also know the post isn't specifically targeted to me, but I just want to be clear that I wasn't accusing this thread (especially considering I was the first to mention the word "backpedaling" here). If Nintendo said they were clarifying then you're just reporting what they've said as it is, which is of good, of course. If that's the idea my posts gave to anyone here then I didn't mean to do that, so I'm sorry!

What I was saying with that is just my take on the matter; I hardly believe what Nintendo said is the truth. Not just that but Nintendo told this originally as a reply to IGN out of all news outlets which I don't particularly trust. So, yeah - I'm mainly criticizing Nintendo and to a lesser extent IGN but I admit that what I'm saying is speculation so it doesn't belong in the title to begin with. However, knowing Ninty's past antics, I still felt compelled to make that post here.

That's a step in the right direction.
To bad the Switch and Nintendo's online service both are a joke.

I guess you could actually say this paints Nintendo in a good light.
No matter how greedy they want to be, deep down their "hearts" they can't help it but listen to their userbase, as much as they want to just rape their wallets they feel remorse about it and rectify themselves for the greater good of their users!
    Such wonderful people! /s

I knew that there would be a grace period, because they never said it would immediately expire. I did my own research when I saw this and nowhere did it say it would happen immediately. It's just all the news outlets blew it out of proportion as usual. They might have changed the amount of time, but there was always a grace period.
