To stop using the mod, which they didn't back down. It's still a messy situation overall.

No. It's when they didn't back down that Nintendo sent them their CD letter.

Imagine shutting down a melee tournament in the middle of a pandemic because fans did something they couldn't; have a proper online experience. Also, the smash community really got together here. No melee, no ultimate tournaments either so they're not getting free advertising.

thats because nintendo are preparing melee to work online themself. i mean think about it, every game they sued they later released it.

Sorry, but they are in their rights, people are playing on the PC so that implies people are using .iso file of a SPECIFIC version of the game since it's not possible to use slippy (a mod in dolphin for online play) with differents versions of the game. So at this moment it's obvious people are playing with a pirated copy, maybe not everyone, but it would be a lie to say it is not the case of the vast majority.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the event was supposed to generate some money? If it's the case this is the actual situation :
    • People are playing on a pirated copy of the game
    • With a not allowed mod
    • And they should be able to earn money on this ?
Don't get me wrong, I don't care about this tournament, I didn't even know it was a thing before the drama but I think Nintendo did nothing wrong in this case.

They are acting like pieces of shit. Melee is almost 20 years old. Nintendo could have become the Steam of consoles if they had offered affordable or free old games. Instead, they milked the hardest core of their fanbase who bought the OoT rom three times or more.
Even if you disregard all of the legal questions, they are hurting themselves by turning their fans into enemies with actions like these.

Well, if you don't liked it then don't give money to them and Nintendo will become broken. Nintendo existed because of our money. Without our money, then Nintendo wouldn't existed!

Yeah they're well within their rights to do so just as they were when they decided you couldn't upload gameplay to YouTube without them siphoning the revenue but it makes them look like complete pricks when in reality an event like that would be positive for them. Even if all the players verified that they ripped their own copies of the game I would be amazed if that made the outcome any different but obviously I can only speculate.

I believe in most places in the world that you're perfectly within your rights to modify a game you own but obviously Nintendo has the right to not allow you to show this.

The event was supposed to generate money but from what I've read, it was to raise money for charity.

I'd like to see what events do from now on (in regards to doing things in a way that won't piss off Nintendo). Seems pretty strange that they are suddenly not okay with Slippi considering people have been streaming that for a while now and NetPlay in general for a very long time. It could give off the impression that they're working on an online implementation of Melee but that seems like way too much effort for Nintendo to do considering the money they can make from just slapping a game on VC with minimal changes.

As the US courts have previously said that console repair is not a valid reason for modifications that bypass DRM, then I think you'd be wasting your breath. The homebrew claim has also been thrown out.

You may as well argue that you have a legitimate use for a kilo of cocaine.

Just to clarify project M is a mod of Brawl not Melee

And also it does not require a special ISO, but rather the mod is usually loaded from an SD card using the official game disc

Oh my bad, do tournaments play stock Melee usually? Makes more sense then that they are taking action against Slippi if that's the case.

(i don't find it funny at all, just immature)
That's why i don't listen streamers in general, unless they are different.
So far i haven't seen that.

Metroid DB had nice stream though, so not all streamers are the same. But it turned out the guy who runs Metroid DB website is jerk on social media...from my experience at least.

So I guess you cant have it both ways.

    — Posts automatically merged - Please don't double post! —

No they are not cause they just demonstrate and excersize power, they add nothing to themself or others.
But you're right. They are in right to be jerks, you got that right, and have legal reason for it.

So yeah..they did nothing wrong....if you're a lawyer that is. Theres always two side of every argument.

Sucking fun out of everything and making it illegal is the new normal these days lol

Yeah, in a legal perspective they are not the people to blame of course, I understand and agree to your point of view when you say they are just hurting themselves and their image with this type of process on a game they don't get money anymore. But "turning fans into ennemies" I'm not sure if it's the real situation, melee hardcore fans are really sticking to their game and denie for some of them the others smash games, I don't know how they can be more "nefarious" for nintendo

Of course nintendo looks like pricks when they was blocking gameplay video on youtube but fortunately it is not the case anymore, they have "evolve" and understood this was actually good for them

But in this case it's very different, except for the charity wich is a noble cause, keeping this melee event is not a good thing in the point of view of nintendo, like I said it's very unlikely the vast majority are playing with a legitimate copy, also there is the "slippy" mod who is apparently "better than the online in smash ultimate".

So for nintendo allowing this tournament is not a good idea because It promote a game they don't sell and are in direct competition with smash ultimate (and was in competition with others smash games before). Why buying smash ultimate when you can pirate and have a better experience of online in melee for free?

Of course they are in their right, it's law and buisness, they are ruining the fun of melee fans but it would not happen if their was no reason but this event is promoting two thing at the end : pirating a copy of melee and use some external modification. Nintendo are far away to be some kind of angels and I know they forbid some stuff for stupid reason some times but for this case we can't blame them.

all the time lol when Sega allows emulation and fan made content Nintendo gets pissed off and say "ThEy OnLY dOIng diZ cUz SeGA CAn'T MakE gUdd GaMeZ anYMoaR" and now Microsoft with Dev Mode that allows Homebrew legitimately is now saying they can't do it cuz it's illegal to do it.... and Sony the only thing people gave them shit for nowadays is for not having backwards compatibility with PS1, PS2, and PS3 games on PS5 when it's definitely possible, but i'm certain they have done something decently good that Nintendo fans gave them shit for but just can't remember atm.

They are SO out of touch with the community that they seem to think all the pro players who would participate in tournaments like these don't actually own a copy of melee. If they gave a single fuck, they would port melee to switch with good online. And no, melee wouldn't compete with ultimate for sales, the games are too different and all the marketing can still go to ultimate.
