A new free update is available for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, adding the ability to select specific items in races. Using this feature allows players to restrict certain items, allocate them based on teams, or even have wild matches where only Blue Shells are available. You can apply this to offline races, and some online modes as well.

that's the same wave 3 update, but this change to vs mode is available for everybody, while the DLC is paid.
