NHS will be funding an internet/gaming addiction clinic

England's National Health Service will be putting a plan into motion to fund and create an internet addiction center, which will focus on helping those "addicted to video gaming". Officially called the Centre for Internet Disorders, it'll be headed by the NHS London Foundation Trust and Henreietta Bowden-Jones, offering help to families with those that are suffering from internet or gaming related disorders.

When asked for a comment about the future opening of the clinic, Jones had the following to say to The Guardian:

Gaming disorder is finally getting the attention it deserves. The distress and harm it can cause is extreme and I feel a moral duty on behalf of the NHS to provide the evidence based treatment these young people and their families need

This follows the controversial decision from the World Health Organization earlier this month, which had been discussing the proposal of classifying gaming addictions and related disorders as a health condition.

One of the major reasons for implementing this is to help keep students from dropping out of school due to negative behavior instigated or caused by an over dependence on video games.

The prototypes are already under way

yeah iirc VR is already used for helping people with agoraphobia, but Idk how well a VR solution for people playing too many games would work XD

i'm sure viddeogames are forbidden inside that structure, like alcohol/drug addiction clinics forbid those same things.
maybe they will just lock you in a room with a huge selection of the worst most broken games until you resent gaming

I'm not going to lie, I think this is a good move.

If you think it's dumb then you're conflating gaming addiction with someone who just plays games a lot/really likes them. But when you see someone with eyebags who hasn't slept in days, washed, or eaten it's honestly horrifying.

It's a very real thing, so yeah good to help people who can't control themselves to play in moderation.

oh yeah? like alchool/drug clinics, they make you drunk or smoke as a wet sponge then they will able to recognize them as a life threat, when did they develop such efficient way to make people quit to drink or drugging ? :rofl2:

I don't think this should really be a surprise seeing as how the NHS is following suit with WHO here.
My problem with this is how society stigmatises playing copious amounts of games but has little problem with the majority of people who spend their waking hours watching TV to a similar degree.

The creation of such programs were only inevitable, over the years I have seen several associates and even some close friends fall heavily addicted to mmorpgs such as EverQuest, FF XI, WoW, Destiny etc. It's a really sad process to watch as their personal lives, Relationships, Health, and personal Hygiene all begin to deteriorate with several flunking out of school, getting fired from their jobs, losing their families or significant others. Addictions come with anything that can be over-consumed. Ultimately I think we are all responsible for our own actions, and to look at ourselves objectively to correct our own issues. I don't see any harm in providing services for those who need additional help in breaking free from their addiction and getting their lives back into order.

I don't think anybody is denying the possibility of people letting things take over their lives. Most of the questioning seems to be whether there needs (either through patient/service user volume or medical need) for a dedicated clinic compared to the other counselling or head shrinker types that already handle all the weird and esoteric things that people can be addicted to.

What a fucking joke!
They have the money the fund this stupid shit, but it takes them 40 minutes to send an ambulance to someone hit by a van, who upon arriving to a hospital is left in a hallway for 2 hours, where they are then only given morphine and sent home to wait 3 months for the proper scans to happen

well, Britishes people don't have to care about endless refugees, getting people out of their internet/videogames addiction is actually a good investment :) look at Italy, endless waves of fake black/muslim/afrorefugees land here every week, guess where goes my tax?? and here are soooo many people with their families shuttered because they are over-addicted into slot machine/gambling.

at least Theresa cares about British's mental health...

Wonder when they'll be finding the "How to control your kids" clinic?

I blame not being able to slap your kids for unruly behaviour anymore.

I do believe you can pay someone for that, you're just not allowed to state that you paid someone to slap your kid... Although a Google search says you can slap a kids backside, if they're wearing a nappy (I guess you have to keep kids in nappies until they leave home). :rofl2:

Where's the porn addiction center? As somebody who is actually against porn this video game addiction center seems like a waste of time and money.
