I'm mot going to say much. I'll let the videos do the talking. A quick note. If OUYA 2 ends up skipping Tegra 4 for this... well, look out everyone! :D

Will this succeed or merely become the next chip-n-fail?

    ...No.

For $99? Not going to happen.

Because that hasn't already been said already and handhelds won't get better hardware
    when the time comes.

It actually took me a sec to see that. lol

And yet phones have produced games that take on the console games.

    Waste of power.

Considering Nvidia's track record with their Tegra line. . . Tegra k1 will be overhyped, underpowered compared to others, and late to the game. I really love Nvidia but they really need to step it up. Also, gflops don't mean shit Nvidia!

Nvidia's still on my shitlist for crippling the Tegra 2. I'm not really interested in another Tegra chipset unless they actually do something with all the power they claim it has.

Also enjoy how the infographic states pretty much nothing that means anything as far as real-world performance goes.

Exactly! Nvidia and their Gflops comparison don't prove squat.

    There's just one problem... Namely the chip aims at taking down consoles that are already walking off the scene by themselves to enjoy a happy retirement after 7+ years of service. Beating the old folks, eh? ;O;

How is that a problem? They're setting realistic goals for themselves.

It's not a problem for me, yourself and a lot of other users, I'm just quelling Lighty's usual uber-enthusiasm regarding the matter. ;)

I'm really wondering why that graph or the second video is in the OP. I suppose it's not bad that it manages to outdo last generation consoles, but those are about 7-8 years old. And even with the difference console <-> mobile, it's a bit overkill to try and prove it, even though it pretty much speaks for itself.

The second video is actually painful to watch. Yup...they're really showing off the capabilities of the next generation of handhelds, alright. Man, look at those graphics! Look at that light sparkling off the lamp! Look at that shiny trash can! Yeah...you know what would be even better? To NOT RECORD IT WITH A FREAKIN' CHEAP HAND CAMERA!!!

...because indie developers are really holding back on their visuals right now?

It's all great and I clap happily seeing progress, but anyone who's into mobile development knows that NVidia's little show does not directly translate to real-life performance. It's great that this thing supports DirectX 11, but you know who doesn't? Mobile developers. Most opt for OpenGL ES, which is nowhere near the main branch of OpenGL in terms of what it can do and no amount of horsepower will help before ES matches its older brother in that regard. We're getting there though, and such developments help setting up future standards.

And while every other current high-end chip supports OpenGL ES, Tegra 4 does not support it.

Well, to be fair, they support... some parts of it. I quote:
That being said... Yes, Tegra 4/4i, despite all the "great" results, does not fully support the future industry standard on OpenGL ES 3 and instead relies on DirectX 11 for mobiles which nobody uses.
