Hi I have a question regarding newer ps3, I have heard that the newer ps3 model would not have backward compatibility with the ps2 games. is that true?

yes, only the original phat versions have backwards compatability.
The best way to find out is to go into the XMB under saves and see if there is an option to create a PS1/PS2 memory card

Err.... My slim PS3 has that option and it most definitely doesn't have backwards compatibility plus there are (a few) "Slim compatible" PS2 games on the PSN store and they save the same way (whether they are truely emulated, partially emulated, or are fully ported is still up for debate). That said, the PS3's built in PS2 emulator for slim consoles works terribly and requires a special dongle and a hacked PS3 and isn't worth giving the time of day to.

The only way to be sure is if you could find an ORIGINAL PS3 phat of the 60GB variety (Full BC) or 80GB (Partial BC with just an EE chip)
