Like most updates to popular websites, it's annoying to adjust to when the old design was working fine, but it's manageable.

The old homepage did the same thing unless there was some sort of filtering that I was unaware of.

I honestly think it's a ton better than the old layout. Much more organized and easier to view. Just fix a few glitches here and there, and it'd be perfect. I'd like an option to remove or add certain "widgets" (e.g. I hate the Recommended Videos, hopefully I can swap it out for something).

You can filter it out by going to Subscriptions => Edit Subscription, and set it to Uploads Only instead. I'm not having issues with the settings after the conversions over either, maybe it's just a glitch for some.

thankfully, my channel hasn't turned into this horrible design but it will eventually

Layout bitching happens everywhere when it happens; as much as they suck most people just live with it.
The only ones that are truely ever mad over YT changes are "Youtubers" when it might affect their income.

The layout is good but needs some tweaking. Too many layout inconsistencies.

Homepage is decent looking, cosmic panda for the channel pages and Feather Beta for no bullshit lists on videos, which YouTube like to do when you click on liked videos, etc.

I don't use cosmic panda solely because they removed the more videos by this uploader button, I use that all the time. Same with Feather, plus feather gets rid of most of the webpage sans the video itself.

But then you can't save videos to favorites, there's no top comments or uploader comments, and I can't watch the bigger youtube player that I normally use (the 480p standard player that takes up the full width of the page).

Edit: And my downloader script doesn't work with it.

And the aforementioned more videos by the uploader button is missing.
