Some people's stupidity never ceases to amaze me. Had a similar case, sold my Original 3DS with CFW, as I bought an XL recently. I compiled a list of DO's & DON'Ts with links to guides and stuff, and made sure the new owner is aware of the risks. I told him, if he bought a new SD card, that he should contact me or follow the guides I provided. 2 days later I receive a text...

" So I bought a new SD card and I updated the firmware... Now its not booting the CFW.. What did I do wrong? "

My next question was, "Did you read my instructions I posted on the SD card, like I told you?"

His reply " hold on, let me check it now"

Just checking something since i heard custom themes broke (on sysnand, this post is mainly for my friends who just use homebrew for custom themes, and i let them use my copy of cubic ninja). Should they update and then install themes, or install them then update?

Either:
Menuhax is broken and O3DS browser exploits are wack as I understand. Updates at least for me have not ever wiped currently installed themeset so if they have custom theme(s) now they should have them after update. Not entirely sure about shuffles as they did something about shufflehax too but that is a menuhax thing.

My brother accidentally updated his 3DS when 10.3 was the new firm and lost homebrew launcher for a while, but still had his custom theme.

Not at the time we couldnt. It was literally the night 10.3 came out an all haxx were broken or w/e
I just tested this and my custom theme stayed on 10.6 ;O;
(now to re-write my nand backup ;U; )
