the dat is a text file in a special format for use with either clrmame or romcentre to check you have everyone and also to check they are not corrupted in anyway

Wow, sounds useful, expecially for collectors. Are there DATs for roms too? What prog should I use for it?

i use clrmame from here and yes there is rom dats available,some are on the clrmame site and another good site for dats is http://rommanager.emuxhaven.net/DATabases.html
