Theyre pretty much all the same really, after all you go through pretty much the same stuff in each game.

If you have the capability though fire red/leaf green on the GBA might be a good starting point but theres no real disadvantage to starting at platinum (platinum is just the same as diamond/pearl with extra features).

Disregard everything that anyone else tells you, the fire starter is always the best and strongest starter.

the fire starters have quite strong moves and plus there aren't many strong fire type you can catch later. they can be hard to train.
the grass type are evenly made, the also have many healing and status effecting moves.
the water type also have quite strong moves, they're "newbie friendly" and really easy to train.

Just pick whatever you think looks coolest in its fully evolved form. I don't even use one in my team anymore.
Edit: What Pokemon to start with or what game to start with?

If you're looking for a good DS Pokemon game, go for Platinum. And if you have trouble deciding what starter to pick, choose the grass one (Turtwig) if you're looking for a easy challenge early-game. However, the fire-type (Chimchar) eventually evolves into the most useful starter later in the game.

It's all about opinions & preference. Just go with one that looks cool to you, or maybe choose the type/element you favor over the other, for me, out of every pokemon game I always chose the water-type starter.

Oh, and if you're talking about the game itself, you should probbaly get Platinum since it's like a better version of Diamond/Pearl.

FireRed or LeafGreen for GBA covers the RBY series with some bonus content

Crystal for GBC covers the GSC series

Emerald for GBA covers the RSE series

Platinum for NDS covers the DPP series

Each series has a separate storyline, and specific pokemon exclusive to that series. Furthermore, each game has pokemon exclusive to that specific version.

If you don't care too much about the storyline / gameplay of the earlier games, you can jump straight into Platinum, although Emerald OR FireRed OR LeafGreen would also be a decent starting point, since they link with Platinum.

Everyone who is suggesting starters obviously can't read. It doesn't really matter which you start with but I can recommend Emerald, Fire Red OR Leaf Green and Platinum. You may also want to consider emulating Crystal on Lameboy if you have a flashcart.
