So is it going to be cheaper than the retail version?

Well so far 3DS games have retailed at about $40 new, so it's the same price.

EDIT: I suppose the argument would be: "Well I don't get a pretty case with box art or a pretty game card or a pretty physical manual to go with it, so I refuse to pay the same price!"

The only advantage from buying it through the eShop is if you live in a different country where games are more expensive.

I rather buy the retail game because: You have it forever, they're the same price, and you can sell it.

Well luckily you don't have to buy it directly from the E-shop, so perhaps retailers will have discounts on the vouchers.

Buying used is cheaper and usually has no downside.

My argument is the physical copy doesn't come with activation issues. Afaik Nintendo only allow you to have it downloaded on one 3ds at a time and the only way to play it on another 3ds is to transfer it. So what happens in 4 years time if my 3ds just randomly dies? I shouldn't have to send it to Nintendo if I don't want to just to get the game I own.

new super mario bros 2 was $29.99 with free shipping yesterday only on newegg. and, game stop is giving away bonuses (some sort of gold coin pendant or something) for those who preorder. there's almost no incentive to buying the game on the eshop.

I don't see myself downloading from the eshop for games like this. I would need to buy multiple copies so that they could play the game, where as they can take turns playing with the physical cart.

I wish I can buy a retail copy of a game that's also available on the eshop, and then dump that retail cart onto the SD card and let it be playable from your 3DS menu, so you can leave your real cart at home to store and keep it safe.
It'd be like flashcarts, but legal through Nintendo, and to make use of the SD card and those various slots/folders on the 3DS menu. And because I'm irked that I won't have the retail box if I download it through eshop.

Tell me about it, I'm sick of paying for more than double the price for a game... Finally we're getting the games at a fair price! =D

that's not a bad idea, but it might be a headache for nintendo to implement due to the potential loopholes exposing the 3ds to hacks.

I would do this for a game like Heroes of Ruin, where you don't really share it at all. Maybe even Mariokart.
I wouldn't do that for a game like Super Mario Bros. because once you finish it, you just hand it off to a friend for a while.

Hit the nail on the head. My gf and I both have 3DSes, and we basically just share the 1 player only games we have (Zelda 3D, SM3DL). The only games we buy 2 copies of (and hence would have any incentive to buy digital) are heavily multiplayer games (Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, SSFIV:3D). And even then, I'd rather buy the cart for roughly the same price (or cheaper used) and have FULL ownership of the game... or, at least enough ownership to be able to give it away and sell it at will.

It is quite possible that the game's multiplayer will be good enough to warrant getting two copies for you but then again maybe it won't.
